ill make this quick. out of the blue today...and every run so far, half of the top loop jumps or gets pulled beneath the gear between the 2 pad rollers. never had an issue until opening potter today. thanks

First make sure there is not undue back tension on the film going into the machine. If thats ok then check the clearance between the pad rollers and the sprocket. Two thicknesses of film should just contact the pad rollers in the closed position. If there is too much clearance then most likely the pad rollers need to be replaced and re-adjusted for proper clearance... pad rollers don't last for ever. While you're checking the pad rollers there is a dowel pin inserted in the center of the width of the sprocket and that goes down into a groove in the sprocket shaft... make sure that pin hasn't fallen out allowing the top sprocket to essentially freewheel. Lastly it's certainly possible for the gear itself to be loose from it's hub which is in turn secured to that sprockets shaft. I've seen ALL of the above happen over the years... could be any of them!! Hope this helps...

sorry i forgot to mention it happens only at splices. worked fine last run last night. now new film and it started doing what i described. thanks again

Also, check the feed sprocket pad roller spring and make sure it is holding the roller assembly closed. I've seen film jump sprocket when a splice passed because of a broken spring.

as with the splices, sounds like they holes weren't punched out all the way and the tape is actually covering the sprocketholes causing the upper loop problem.

I changed the pad rollers. checked all splices etc...on the pad roller assembly there are only the small hex bolts to remove the 2 rollers. there is nothing to adjust the spacing or tension of the roller assembly, and i did notice when the pad rollers are shut the roller on the right, is frozen on the gear and wont spin.....

Go to the manuals section of this site. Look up the Simplex XL manual (1960).

Go to page 56 of the PDF where it shows page 4-11 of the manual.

There you will see the adjustment screw and the locking nut for it. You might print it and take it to the machine for reference.

The proper spacing is 2 thicknesses of film.

ok thanks i located it and will loosin it to see if that was the prob. the light in the booth sucks bad and i couldnt see the adjustment.

what are the odds that is the prob?

100%, but also be aware that there are 2 pad rollers. One is normal and the other is eccentric, so that both can be set to the 2 thichnesses mentioned above. Louis

You have to adjust the pad roller arm first with the front stop allen setscrew for the rear pad roller at the thickness, then you adjust the eccentric shaft for the front pad roller thickness.
