Surround EX processing is listed as a feature of the JSD-80 and there is one mention in the manual about setting the speaker configuration to "EX". I couln't find any mention about how you engage/disengage EX based on whether or not the movie is recorded with it.

Any ideas on how EX is implemented/enabled/disabled in the JSD-80.

On the JSD-80 Laptop Interface Software click on the "file" in the upper left hand corner. Under there you will see "Channel Configuration". There you will see the different channel configurations. Click the "Back Surround Channels". If you need anything else call USL at 805-549-0161 and ask for JSD support.

I saw that in the manual but how do you turn it on/off based on the feature and if it is EX encoded or not?

We've had the JSD-80 for months and I never even realized it was EX capable until today.

Considering Lyle that your wiring is also capable of the EX. In any case you would benefit only from Digital sources and not from analogue.

Right Demetris but not all digital soundtracks have the EX back surround encoded. The SA10 Surround EX adapter has an engage/disengage button.

To turn it off you would need to go into the software and re-configure the channels. If you are set up for back surrounds and not five stage channels I would just let it stay in the back surround configuration.
