What is this story about the two week only in theaters? Can anyone confirm it? Will it have any 3D footage?

Yes, two weeks only. No 3D.

After watching the trailer, there's only one reason I'd want to see the movie:

To see this chick dancing in a cage!
Then, again, knowing the way trailers are made, I've probably seen all I'm ever going to get.

I found out today there will be at least some 35mm prints available. I haven't heard anything as to how many prints or if it will be digital only in digital locations. I'm glad they are doing 35mm prints because I was not looking forward to dealing with the pissed off people because we couldn't play it.

Posted by Justin Hamaker (Member # 2165) on 09-16-2009, 04:53 PM:
I actually think it will wind up being very big - like well over $100 million.
Posted by Demetris Thoupis (Member # 833) on 09-16-2009, 04:58 PM:
From the trailer it clearly shows that the King still got it. His death was one of the sadest and most tragic in music History. Looking forward to seeing it but judging from some pre-released statements and the trailer it seems that some parts might be 3d (see MJ jumping out a window dressed in Smooth Criminal and bullets flying towards the screen) and some statements from Kenny Ortega some weeks ago said that perhaps some footage will be in 3D.

Posted by Mike Blakesley (Member # 26) on 09-17-2009, 12:30 AM:
It's only 2 weeks because it's going to be a quick rush and fade with a huge first week, and big drop the second. If it holds up well in week 2 I'd guess it'll hold for maybe another week or two, but I'm guessing the quick run is so they can get it out on video by Christmas.
I'll be surprised if it doesn't gross $125 million or more. I doubt we'll play it though.
Posted by John Wilson (Member # 269) on 09-17-2009, 03:26 AM:
I think you're right on both fronts...it'll be big...and it'll be in everyone's Christmas stockings.

It's just marketing. Like Disney -"Get it on DVD now because after this, IT'S GOING BACK INTO THE VAULTS!" You can bet that if they are still getting lines at the BO after the 14th day, they will extend it as long as they need to.
And may I say, with all that lipservice as to how everyone on the planet "loved" and "respected" MJ, Hollwood is already out there halking a new movie? And, how can I say this delicately....the body isn't even cold yet! When did they start editing footage for this thing....the minute the hospital spokesperson issued the statement, "Michael Jackson died today at......" Freakin vultures.

I think this has less to do with hollywood and more to do with his estate. He died in enormous debt and his estate is trying to bring in as much as possible to pay it off. The reason for the quick release is that they know interest in this will fade over time so getting it out now will bring the most revenue. If they waited a year the "let's see what he performed like right before he died" train wreck spectacle will be gone and 1/2 the potential audience will be gone with it.

Yup, marketing. And not for nuthing, that family is one bunch of twisted greedy media whores as ever was spawned from the bowels of hell. Did you catch Latoya with Barbara Walters, every word that come out of that freak's mouth sounded like a total fabrication. Can't wait until the media is done with this horror show and moves on to something else. We sure could use a Britney distraction for some laughs about now.

According to our film bookers, Sony has told them that they have dropped the 3-D idea for the movie and will release it 2-D only in both 35mm, & digital.
Posted by Frank Angel (Member # 248) on 09-28-2009, 02:09 PM:
Wait a minute -- this was FILMED in 3D? Or were they going to do that computerized 2D into 3D bs? If it were actually shot in 3D, then it would be a shame to not have it released that way, at least in the few 3D installations available. Well, if it was shot in 3D, given the discussion in the thread about 3D television sets already being manufactured, I guess if it can't be seen in theatres in 3D, they can always release it in 3D for home video.
Posted by Ian Parfrey (Member # 5122) on 09-28-2009, 02:47 PM:
Hi Sally Anne.
It appears that Readings is advertising the film as in 3D yet the official Sony "This Is It" website makes no reference to 3D anywhere. Its very easy to see where confusion enters when there is this type of unqualified advertising. Have you heard any info from other cinemas that are claiming to show this film in 3D?
Either way, this film is going to do boffo boxoffice during the 2 week run.
Posted by Ramon Lamarca Marques (Member # 3621) on 09-28-2009, 03:19 PM:
In London it has been advertised as 'in Imax' in some theatres, which proves that the word 'in Imax' no longer means anything. I suppose that if Imax developed a new system for showing films with two interlocked 8mm projectors that would be called 'in Imax' as well, even if it had been filmed with a 9.5mm camera.
Posted by James. R. Deeter (Member # 837) on 09-28-2009, 03:47 PM:
It will be in IMAX. They cut a deal late Friday to run it as an evening feature....
Posted by Matt Skilton (Member # 5288) on 09-28-2009, 05:17 PM:
I'm assuming it's going to be good old 2D 35mm for us. It'll make more money for one thing, and the digital/3D screen is pre-occupied that particular week.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
OK, (deep breath) one last time...ready?
'THIS IS IT' will be in 2D only. No 3D. It is true that some sequences (3 actually) were shot with 3D, but in the interest of who knows what...probably time constraints I'd imagine, Sony have decided not to release it in 3D but only 2D.
Just because some cinema website in New Zealand has it as 'IN 3D' does not make it so.
So, in conclusion, Your Honour, 'This Is It' is to be released NOT in 3D but ONLY IN 2D.
(Waits silently for the next person to ask if it's coming out in 3D...Phil and Joe, you just stop right there!)

It's going to be in 35mm in the UK, all the digital screens will have UP on them still. Lots of interlocks is my guess.
We're looking at 4am shows as well, it's apparently to do with the premiere being at 8pm Pacific which of course is 8 hours behind us on GMT.

Maybe it's not an option for some of the smaller sites who are running UP in digital, but it is being offered in both formats in the UK to those who can. Certainly we are not commited to either format yet.

Posted by Oliver Harper (Member # 4245) on 09-29-2009, 05:17 AM:
Yeah we are getting a 35mm copy and only playing on a medium size screen..odd choice by the film buyers because we have already sold quite a few tickets. Shame we are not getting it in digital. then we can run on our 3 digi projectors.
Posted by Matt Skilton (Member # 5288) on 09-29-2009, 06:33 AM:
Indeed UP will dominate most digital screens at that time in the UK but we already have screenings of An American Werewolf in London and My Bloody Valentine 3D planned that week because it's Halloween week.
So 35mm prints will be better in the long-run, and will no doubt be interlocked plenty of times. Guess we'd better start teaching our floor support trainee how to do interlocks

The only 3Ds running right now are ICE AGE 3 (since July, Odeon-Fox) and THE FINAL DESTINATION 4 (since September, Village Films). UP, Bolt, Monsters vs Aliens, Coraline etc. were not shown in 3D. I can't discuss the whys, for the moment, in public. You can have an idea though considering who the distributors of the above mentioned films are.

Just had to add a comment on this "hilarious" misunderstanding. It may have been true that Sony was originally planning to release a 2D and 3D version. However, it has come to light that they did away with it probably due to the added cost of production or distribution. As such, the marketing (at least stateside) makes no mention of a 3D version.

>>Please note that prints may be bench checked, however, no screenings (including any tech screenings etc) are to take place prior to the 9pm screenings on Wed.<<
That's ill-advised, wouldn't you say?
Posted by Geena Phillips (Member # 3726) on 10-26-2009, 07:40 PM:
Huh. Funny, since we've:
A) already got an approved show for Tuesday midnight; and
B) not heard a thing about it being anything other than a start-of-business on Wednesday opening.

Geena,
Don't forget...we're 15 hours ahead of you. Our 9.30pm screening takes place at 6.30am Wednesday your time so we're all being given the OK to start around the same time.

Has anyone done a run through of this movie yet? Did you adhere to their "cut here"'s without counting back frames? I work at a 4 screen with two two-projector booths that each has a common five tier platter. We only have a table to build on the side where the middle platter is very inconveniently sporting a broken disc spindle that I've been trying to get replaced but have not been able to locate. So, long story short, I need to build in-between shows. It offers very little time. I've done two reels between each set all day and just now have it done. I'm looking through this thread and it says no early run throughs? Every single reel after 2 begins and ends with a cut here, and in my experience those have never, ever, ever been on frame. I didn't have time to count back ten feet of film and still get the print built. Has anyone run this thing through yet? Are the "cut here"'s good, are some of them bad, are they all bad? I might be able to squeeze a run through in between the end of my earliest show and the beginning of the midnight, but I don't know that I have time to fix up to 8 bad splices if none of these things are right.
Posted by John Wilson (Member # 269) on 10-27-2009, 07:08 PM:
The 'CUT HERE' marks are not on all reels...they are not on T1, T2, H2, H3, H5.
The rest of them do have 'CUT HERE' and yes, they are all good.
Posted by Michael Hossen (Member # 4274) on 10-27-2009, 07:37 PM:
As John said, the cut here marks are good. Although, some of the reels didn't have them, even when there was a fade out, which made it a bit more difficult.
Posted by Justin Hamaker (Member # 2165) on 10-27-2009, 09:01 PM:
I'm reposting this since I didn't see the discussion (on this specific issue) before starting a new thread.
On my print of This Is It, I had the following problems with "Cut Here" lines
T3 - No problem
H4 - 1/2 perf off
T4 - 1 perf off
H5 - 1/2 perf off
T5 - 1/2 perf off
H6 - missing entirely, but should be present.
On H6, you can see the reel starts with a fade, but there is no "Cut Here" line. So I measured back 32 frames from the 3 on the leader.
By 1/2 perf off, I mean the line is even with the hole and there is no indication whether to cut before or after the line.

Obviously, our version i/neg is different to yours then as ours were printed locally.
Sorry Paul, my information may not apply to your print then.

I think they were the same on our 2 prints, I might've trusted one of them on one of the first reels, but most were one, two, or half a sprocket hole off. The next two hours of anticipation is going to kill me.
Posted by Jeremy Weigel (Member # 4208) on 10-27-2009, 11:53 PM:
All of the "cut here" marks were correct for our print.
On another note, we only had 12 people for our 1105pm showing.
So yeah, I'm here till 1am for 12 freakin' people.
Posted by Joe Redifer (Member # 3) on 10-28-2009, 12:41 AM:
When the movie is flat like this one likely is, the CUT HERE marks will tend to be a 1/2 perf off. Big deal.
Posted by Jim Cassedy (Member # 4115) on 10-28-2009, 12:54 AM:
We almost had no show. A shipping screw up meant I was
not going to get my print until very late in the afternoon.
No problem. But then, in case U haven't seen or heard the news,
a major structural failure on the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge closed
it indefinately in both directions. And my print was stuck on it.
To make a long story short- - my print finially arrived
about 50min before show time, and I still had run 5 other
auditoriums & move two prints around to make room for
this one. (Don't ask!)
I checked the first couple of "CUT HERE"s with a frame counter,
but didn't have time to check the rest. I barely got it done
in time. Show is running now, and so far no one has come out
to complain- - so I'm going to assume everying is OK. Right
now I'm stuck in another part of the building so I can't keep
an eye on the show as much as I'd like to.
If you'd like to read more about the Bay Bridge failure, clik link:
Bay Bridge Closure
The bridge is still closed, with no estimate of re-opening.
Looks like traffic will be a mess here till they get it repaired.
Fortunately, I don't have to cross the bridge to get to & from work.

Come on Joe, that's like saying the frame lines will be 1/2 a perf off on Flat movies.

My print had at least 2 one perf off on the cut here!
Head 6 and i can't remember the other.
Loved the movie but it is very sad at the same time.
The sound did seem lower than the norm.
Posted by Joe Redifer (Member # 3) on 10-28-2009, 03:49 AM:
Justin, no, that's like saying that the CUT HERE marks are printed to the edge of the 1.85 image area. Think about it. All it takes is a little common sense about film formats. Personally, I don't think the CUT HERE marks should be there at all but in this age where 95%+ of people in projection booths are idiots, I guess I can see why some studios include them.
Posted by Justin Hamaker (Member # 2165) on 10-28-2009, 06:19 AM:
If the marks "tend" to be off, it's only because someone is sloppy with their work. Anyone who is involved with the production of the prints should know the edge of the flat picture is not the frame line.
Maybe it's not a big deal to account for this when you are aware it's a potential issue and you're looking for it. However, very few movies have any "cut here" marks, so dealing with them is far from routine to begin with. When they are present, getting them on the frame line should be as critical as ensuring the chageover cues are in the right position or the attached trailer is in frame. It's no different than last summer when the marks on Wall*E were off by one perf - and it was a scope picture.
There's a lot of bitching on FT about film handlers who aren't doing things well, so I don't understand why you would be so forgiving about labs not making sure they are sending out quality prints.

We just screened our "sneak" which is happening at least state-wide before opening day tomorrow. I did not get to see all of the movie, but something that instantly struck me was how nice our print looked. It was rock steady with amazing focus on even the smallest text. I forgot to check the lab, but I am very impressed.

Are they from Taiwan? They make some very nice prints.
Ours came from Deluxe and as usual bounce all over the screen.

I didn't really have time to watch any of the film,
except a few times when I stuck my head in to make sure
everything was running OK, but one of the things I did
notice was that the print quality was excellent. It had
a visual "snap" I haven't seen in most prints I get lately.
As I said in my previous post- - due the fact I had almost
NO time to make up this print before the show, I only checked
the first "cut here" line with a frame counter to see if it
was accurate, which it was on my print.
The rest of the reels I cut by finding the change-over
cue marks and then measuring from there to my cut point
using a frame-ruler I have affixed to my make-up bench.
It was quicker for me that way. And I had no time.
In the end, everything wound up in frame.

The DTS playback from DTS6D in 3 theaters I checked turned out great in sound balance. And it was not low. I have not heard it in DD though or SR so I cannot tell. By the way MJ still had it and he was great.

Sony sent out a memo from director Kenny Ortega saying, basically, play this movie AS LOUD AS POSSIBLE so as to recreate the concert experience as much as possible.
I don't know if this is good or not, considering the shitty sound one normally experiences at concerts.

This was the first time I've ever done it this way. I just now realized my error. I counted 16 frames between numbers in the countdown and so I did 32 to get from 3 to where the 1 should be - not thinking that I actually needed to get to where zero should be.

In case you haven't already heard:
SONY has now extended the "two week limited
release" of this film through Thanksgiving.
I'm sure this "news" is of no surprise to anyone here.
I've said from day one that the "two week only"
announcement was nothing more than a marketing gimmick.
Posted by Michael McGovern (Member # 4807) on 11-02-2009, 12:28 AM:
Sony's original plan was likely to follow through with the two week release, and have the DVD set to come out for Black Friday. Since all the exhibitors refused to play the film with such a short release window, they went in this direction instead. Paramount has been getting a lot of heat with this as well, as "The Goods" was scheduled to be released on DVD this past week, less than 2 months after it's theatrical release, and NATO had a fit about it, so it got pushed back to the end of the month. The same thing is happening this week with "GI Joe", but Paramount is just taking the heat for that one and is planning to go through with the DVD release on Tuesday, just barely 2 months after the film was in theaters.
As for this film, where were all the sold out shows Sony swore up and down we were going to have? I had to run this on three screens this weekend, and the only thing I have to say about business was, this is it? I've actually heard the film played out much better on the West Coast, but out East over here, we had nothing, in fact it was amongst the slowest weekends in recent memory.
Posted by Jeremy Weigel (Member # 4208) on 11-02-2009, 01:01 AM:
With the lack of business we had with it I doubt we'll play it past the 2 week mark.

"The Goods" was released on August 14th and "G.I.Joe" was released on August 7th. That's really close to that coveted 3 month mark for video release. In fact, "G.I.Joe" will be almost exactly 3 months this Tuesday. "The Goods" would have been at the 2 1/2 month mark.
Posted by Michael McGovern (Member # 4807) on 11-02-2009, 01:20 AM:
3 months is still a ridiculously short turnaround, especially when you have films like "Up", "The Hangover". and "Star Trek" which will all have almost double that, a 6 month release window. I know the studios are looking for a quick way to recoup their losses with duds like "The Goods" or movies that were completely front loaded like "GI Joe", but where does this leave second run and discount theaters in this equation?
Posted by Jeremy Weigel (Member # 4208) on 11-02-2009, 01:42 AM:
I certainly agree with ya that 3 months is a short turnaround in most cases and can certainly hurt discount house. I was just pointing out that you're time spans were a little off (its been well over 2 months since release on both).
Posted by Caleb Johnstone-Cowan (Member # 3710) on 11-02-2009, 02:53 PM:
With Disney they usually stagger theatrical releases globally to gain maximum box office so don't want those to be compromised by DVD rips online from the US, hence the long release windows.
This Is It did well but not three prints well which from an operations point of view was perfect for us, we had visions of two prints and nightmarish interlocked screens to clean and hundreds of customers to serve. We're playing it loud and it looks and sounds great from what I have seen.
