Just some picts for the curious:

A Hortzon 16mm "Left hand Thread" mounted on a motorized pedestal that can use 25inch reels and has a Kniesley "Pup" 1kw xenon lamphouse behind it... with the swing out anamorphic attachment.

If left hand, where is the "right hand" partner..(if there was a right hand unit made)?

They made them leftside thread so they can sit next to a 35mm in a small booth. Kinton/Phillips also made a leftside thread.

Also the soundtrack is on the outside of the sound drum. They don't need a mirror to rfelect it to the cell.

Hortsons are great machines and seem to be pretty bulletproof.

The only place I ever ran into a Hortson was in a Seattle porno theatre, back when I was "paying my dues"... Yep, back in the '70s even the pornos had union operators in the booth.

The projectors were outstanding performers, but I got a substantial reality check, having to thread those things backwards. For most, it's probably like learning to write with the other hand!

I actually like these machines. With a good lens, the picture quality can be very good. The one that I am most familiar with uses a xetron lamphouse. Sound quality can also be quite good (for 16mm). The takeup also spins "backwards" (emulsion out) on these.

Interestingly, most motion-picture cameras thread from the left-hand side. I've never understood why projectors and cameras thread from opposite sides.

Many years ago in a university film society booth we were able to afford one Hortson to go with our Helens Bowel //Bell and Howell. This was back in carbon arc days, so with the Hortson on the right and the B&H on the left you could do manual change-overs with ease.
