I've seen the two guide rollers immediately below the intermittent on the FP20 (etc..) in many different positions from completely horizontal to completely vertical and angles in between. opinions on the best position?

The "normal" position is VERTICAL. However, you can use them to stabilize the film feeding the soundhead. By rotating them counter-clockwise, you will find a point where the vibration feeding into the soundhead will be minimized. If you are having any flutter issues, this can be of some benefit.

Wouldn't mounting those two rollers vertical limit the skate pole adjustment and make it awkward the tuck the film around the intemittant behind the skate, especially in projectors where the lenses are a long way back?

Nope, not really. The upper roller on the FP20 is small...the lower one is large.
