So I'm having an issue with the water cooling on our vic 8. The pump is connected, but I'm not getting any water flow. The pump is fine because it still works for our 16mm. I'm guessing there is just a plug in the projector somewhere.

Any thoughts on how to flush out the system?

First disconnect the coolant lines from the projector and see if the pump is actually working or not. Pump failures are not uncommon, especialy Silent Giant punps. Also be sure the pump lines themselves are not clogged. If you have good flow with the hosees disconnected then the cooling loop on the projector is plugged... They can be difficult to get open again and a stiff wire pushed in there may free the plug if it's close to either end. Sometimes boiling the cooling loop out at a radiator shop also works. If none of this helps then replacem,ent of the cooling loop is in order. I have seen many many DP-70 cooling plates plugged with calcium over the years...

Hello Dan,

Some years ago I had a similar coolant problem with our V 10s. They can be troublesome if the system is allowed to dry between uses. Like one show a month or so.

First try reversing the direction of the flow through the system. (Our system also cools the positive jaws of the arc lamps)

Try using a syringe to force water through the system in spurts.

Once you can get a little flow, put common Vinegar into the lines and let it sit for a while. Then flush out everything and reconnect the proper direction of flow.

One commercial product for scale removal is "Dip-It" and that is made for electric coffee pots but can also work on scaled cooling pipes.

the water jacket on a vic 8 is in two parts one is the back part of the shutter box and it is in serries with the apperture block
try checking each one individually
compressed air with often clear the lines they are very robust in construction and can withstand a fairly high pressure
once you find the clogged one a lime remover will often clear it

I remember doing this job with techs at both Greater Union cinemas and later Hoyts drive-ins on the Vic 8's with water cooling. Stiff wire generally unblocked the cooling loop in the projector.

It was easier to fix if it had only recently blocked. Once it was blocked for months it became difficult to do.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, I'll be giving them a go as soon as possible.

To remove the coolant pipe, I'll need to remove the whole shutter housing, yes? Once it's all apart will it be pretty clear how to remove the pipe? Will I still be able to run shows without the pipe, or do other parts need to be pulled out along with it?
