I have a V8 that I need to replace the gate frame opening/closing lever shaft. When trying to open the gate, the opening lever just spins. I have removed the top and bottom screws of the housing that holds the lever but cannot remove the assembly. Is there a trick to get this off.

Do you have a pic of the part you are refering to? There were two variations of it. One with a round knob and one with a newer type of knob which differs a bit. Post a picture first.

I will have to go to the theatre and get the pic. I can tell you that it is not the round knob, but the level handle version. I do have an old V8 head we use for parts, that one has the round knob,which works fine, would that be interchangeable with the lever version?

I am not sure. Remove first the cover gate by opening it and sliding the opened part upwards and towards you. You should see two screws holding the complete gate assembly on the casting which you should remove to remove the plete assembly. There might be some very fine metal spacers between the assembly and the main casting. Make sure to not remove them. From there on you can clearly see the knob mechanism and figure how to remove it.

Allen screws were loose on the lever and tension spring behind it was broke.

I'll remember that. Bob's a little green and just went for way to complicated of a fix.

FYI it's 8r and panel he was trying to remove doesn't come off with out removing the back cover first. The Water lines are connected to to front cover.

Good old water lines. Today is not a standard feature. You need to specially order them.
