I am wondering to see how others approach when specifying or quoting equipment for new or existing projects. Do you prefer using THX certified equipment or is that a long gone memory?

Whereas we still certify/recertify THX theatres...yes!

As to the THX certification...it never hurts to specify that equipment as it is another "seal of approval." Furthermore, most of the good stuff is certified so it isn't a problem anyway.

Steve has it exactly right. Why sell anything that is sub standard? Even if you don't think you will ever "go THX"in this location most times equipment has an afterlife. Good stuff sells and otherwise "stays around." Louis

The THX certified equipment has always been my driving standards on projects I specify. I was just wondering if people would really consider non THX certified equipment as lower standard like for example the JBL 4670D which comes to mind right now.

The 4670D is a lesser speaker than the 4675C. The horn does not have near the pattern control (look at the polar plots)...hence, not THX approved.

Also, the 4670D has lesser drivers and a passive crossover built into the cabinet.

Nevertheless you can still Bi-Amp the speaker without using the crossover network.

Yes you can...and it remains a lesser speaker...it has 2035 drivers instead of the 2226 and a lesser horn (2380 versus 2360). Most folks that bi amp it also tend to wire the LFs through the crossover...thereby adding a time element to the signal plus mucking the crossover point.

Now you can order the 4648A system and the 4670-HF to address the lesser LF system but you still have a small horn that can't really do its job down to 500Hz. It is like going hunting with a pistol...it may shoot the same bullet but now with the accuracy as the rifle.
