My last splicer bit the dust today and I need a replacement by Thursday for building next week's movies. We use MyCinemaStore.com for our supplies and they offer an economy splicer for 195. I'm getting ready to order it very soon and was hoping to get some feedback from the Film-Tech community ASAP about the quality of this splicer and advise on splicer shopping in general.

That looks to be a rebadged version of the CIR 35mm splicer.

Just out of curiosity, what brand of splicer do you have now? Is it not possible to do a repair/exchange?

As to the "economy splicer" its a clone of the CIR M2 listed above it, except that it looks like it has a bottom plate/cover to catch the tape punch outs/chads.

My experience with the CIR M2 was OK. I much prefer the Splycmar/Neumade splicers.

If it is the splicer I'm thinking of...it is a piece of junk. It is a CIR knock-off. Regardless of what one thinks of the CIR line...this is not the same splicer, it is worse. I would stay away from it. We had a customer that bought the entire booth from us...except the splicer...they bought the economy splicer...guess what the ONLY piece of booth equipment had to be changed? Guess what they have now? A Neumade/Splycemar! They use the crapped out "economy splicers" as examples of what the projectionists will have to work with if they don't take care of the good splicer!

There are probably decent used Neumades out there now (I know we can supply used ones now). Splycemar is also available from most dealers for immediate shipment.

You can find cheap CIR splicers in eBay frequently. I've used cheap imitations of Neumade and CIR and was horrible!

Splicer appears to be the knockoff from India. American Cinema Equipment stocks punches and U-blades. This splicer can be tweaked to work, but is not a production machine. Angle of U-blade is shallower than Ciro angle, so doesn't spread enough before reaching tape and can nick film.

In Joe Redifer's FEB 2000 review of Ciro, he couldn't identify need for knob at right that retracts end pins; it accomodates acetate filmbase that has shrunken enough so as to not span all pins. The India knockoff I've used lacks this knob, shouldn't be a problem with estar filmbase.

I love using cheap splicers! Keeps the cost to the company down. No sense in spending extra money for essentially the same thing. Why buy a Cadillac when you can have a Kia for less money, and they both transport you from point A to point B.

Ummmm, no. By your definition, every kind of lens produces an image. Every kind of speaker produces sound. All splicing tapes join film.

Cheap crappy splicers have no business in a professional booth as they actually damage the film.

Your analogy doesn't work in that your cheap car won't damage you every time you get in it, unlike a super-cheap splicer with your film.

well, the economy splicer actually ended up just being a refurbished one. I built "The Tourist" and both of our "Narnia 3" prints with it and it worked phenomenally. we'll see how long before it needs a repair. (hopefully after we go all digital)
