Posted by Kenneth Wuepper (Member # 1174) on 01-10-2011, 08:44 PM:

Mark,
The old Hatke reel end alarms with the ball bearing inside always gave 2 dings. If you spun the reel too fast when threading it would give 3 dings.

The other magazines that had the arm riding on the emulsion side of the film only made 1 ding when the arm fell.

About five years ago, I made a "projector sounds" tape with some good equipment (Schoeps microphone and DAT recorder). It was made for a completely different purpose, but I could make a WAV file of the Hatke bells if anyone wants it. It has the projector and lamp exhaust noise in it as well, however, so it would not work as well as a ringtone or sound effect as a recording of just the bell (which I did not think to make, unfortunately).

It could also be an indication that the one who was once a real projectionist is aging right along with the vintage equipment that is so admired!

when watching a movie at home on video you have to have a tape recorder playing the sound of a running film projector in the room.

Nothing makes you jump faster then a sound like film tailing out or snapping in the machine.

That's wrong. You don't want the lights coming up the second the credits hit the screen. You want to give it a few seconds for the audience to realize the movies is over and get "mentally" ready to go back into the real world -- not "jar" them into reality.

(You know you're a projectionist when you're anal about when the lights come up at the end of a movie)

You have you living room lights on a dowser so you can lower them half way for all of the crap at the beginning of the DVD and all the way for the Feature. Extra points if you have aisle lights in your living room.

Commentary tracks are NEVER treated as part of the movie

When I was a kid, but very aware about film presentation technology, whenever a film played on TV and I saw the reel changeover dots, I used to scream out "commercial!" and 99% of the time, there'd be one. My family never figured out how I did that.

I remember that up till around the mid 1980's there were
cue marks on many "live" network TV programs, such as
game shows and even on the Tonight Show.

They were usually little white square dots(an oxymoron!)
on the upper right that quickly flashed two or three times
about 10sec before the video faded out.

I assume the local stations "down the line" used them
to start their video-tape or film prerolls.

you get word to turn the lights down in a theatre, run to the booth, and find... its still in the damn trailers!

And that just happened to me 5 minutes ago.

...a 'fake' film break in a DLP or home video performance makes you bolt out of your seat.

...you give visiting guests (or worse, your date) a tour of where all the old closed down theatres you used to work at were located.

...you have a picnic table made out of a Christie AW2 platter deck and a large Goldberg tower reel. [Cool]

...Your main travel destination for the year is to attend ShoWest/ShowEast/CinemaCon.

...you prefer a shortened version of a song played over end credits because the well-used print you ran in a discount house was missing part of the credits causing an early tailout (this is especially true for me with Peter Cetera's Glory Of Love) [Roll Eyes]

You go Awwh Shit when you see that you have spliced in a reel upside down and have to recover from it quickly.
Luckily using a MUT so only lost 14mins on screen..big wakeup call though! First and last time ever..I hope.

Uhhh, yeah...

So, you know you're a projectionist when...

You pour your heart and soul into explaining to management figures why test screenings should proceed without constraints on when they can be conducted, so that things like upside-down reels in shows don't stand a chance of happening.

2.) ... After the night of the power cut where everything dies and a couple of shows are stuck in projectors with an hour to run, you head home, flick the bedroom light switch on, fall asleep, awaken at 6:00AM, race to work, enter the projection room at 6:10AM, and build up the Harry Potter print that releases in 3 hours... before reattaching things to the building that ripped off in the storm that knocked out power for 8-9 hours.

Yeah, the show must go on. [fu]

3.) The plastic things rolling around under the passenger seat of your car are old rigid cases for Osram short arc lamps that, you know, you might need one day just in case, just because those cloth bags don't have slots in them...

4.) The phone rings (again) and you immediately tell it to "Oh, fuck off!"

5.) You wake up in the middle of the night, totally puzzled, and mildly annoyed, by some tiny thing in your mouth. You turn on the bedside light, work it loose, spit it out and there in your hand is a 2mm squarish piece of clear splicing tape.

Those things get everywhere! [uhoh]

My Strong lamphouse had a little extension doodad that had to be screwed onto the end of the lamp before clamping it into the holder.

I kept one of those plastic lamp cases because it made a dandy "wrench" for screwing that on and taking it off.

These are great! Regarding "You want to scream whenever you see 4x3 pictures stretched out to fit 16x9 TV screens. Or vice-versa." my wife and I notice that her parents watch TV with the "fat mode" enabled.

On another one, I ALWAYS see the reel change cue on screen. I haven't seen enough digital movies to notice, but do they also put the reel cue on screen?

Hey Harold! Did you know there used to be an IA local in SLO? I worked for them at the Lompoc Theatre and later owned the Mission theatre in Solvang.

Quick Chris Slycord impression...

Your statement implies that you HAVE seen digital movies, but previously you state you NEVER miss changeover cues.

[Confused]

I don't actually work in theaters (I work at USL designing stuff). So, I'm generally in the auditorium instead of the booth. I am occasionally in a booth helping on an install or troubleshooting something (like a celltower across the street causing a problem). The one digital movie I know I've seen MANY, MANY times is The Game Plan, since that's test content used in ISDCF Plug Fests ( http://www.isdcf.com/ISDCF/Plugfest.html ).

Great discussion!

FYI his confusion wasn't relating to whether you worked in a theater or not. It was about the fact that if you never miss the changeover cue like you claimed then it would take roughly 20 minutes into the first digital screening you watched to figure out if the cues were there or not. [Razz]

Hatke alarm bells with projector running (~500K)

When the tech from Christie spends all day setting up your new DLP projector then, when he's done, everybody gathers at the back of the auditorium to look at the picture, they marvel at how "great" the picture looks.

You stand there and look but don't say a single word until they turn and ask you, "Doesn't that look great?"

You know you're a projectionist when you lie and say, "It looks good."
