The pioneer film preservationist Harold Brown built an optical step printer out of Meccano and some recycled bits from a 1905 Gaumont projector. It was used to print the preservation masters of some of the most widely seen titles from the British Film Institute collection to this day, and printer buffs say that the registration and stability of the elements it created rivals that of the Matipo.

The most significant thing about this S8 projector, IMO, is that the light source is an LED. I'd really, really love someone to produce an LED mod for my Eiki NT2 and/or Elmo GS1200 - it would end all colour temperature issues and any risk of heat damage to older dye film elements.
