I need to buy a Neumade splicer to replace a crappy, worn out brand-x model I currently have at the drive in and it appears I have 3 options from my dealer. I could get a 35SS, a 35S or a Neutaper. What would you folks recommend?

I have several 35SS splicers in my theaters and love them to death but since I have no experience with the other Neumade models, I'd like to get everyone's input.

Get yourself one of the Splycemar units (reviewed on this site).

It's exactly the same as the Neumade device and manufactured by the same company. You'll save some money, too!

We've been using one of these splicers for the last two years and cannot fault it.

"Neutaper" was the name given for any of these Neumade splicers.

Best stick with the 35SS, for that's the most common splicer used.

If you go to the top of the page here and click on products you'll see film-tech sells a splicer that can function just like a regular 35SS but also has the ability to do 8-perf splices.

I've not used one but if the difference in price between it and the regular 35SS from your dealer isn't tremendously high, I'd consider the upgrade.

There _is_ a difference in the 16mm version. The 16SW model cuts a (not quite) double width of tape, so you only need to punch the splicer once (the excess tape is then wrapped around the film to cover the other side). The regular 16mm model (16SS?) requires that the film be flipped, taped, and re-punched, as with the 35mm model.

The 16SW is faster and easier to use; I prefer it to the regular 16mm version, but others may disagree. I suggest trying it before ordering the regular version.

Not that any of this probably has anything to do with the original question, however....

(Side note: do _not_ drop any of these splicers, ever. They are a pain to re-align afterwards.)

I have been looking for a Newmade splicer like the 35SS but with fox sprockets for 4trk mag. I assume they would call it model 35CS, but that's just a guess. If anyone comes across one of these for sale, PLEASE give me a shout.

I use the Neumade SW model for 16mm and am perfectly happy with it, but it's my understanding that this one with the wrap around tape was designed for TV news work where speed was the biggest criteria. As I said, I have no problems with it and feel it makes great splices.
