A customer's CP-650 was working fine yesterday but today after powering up the fader level indicator is stuck at 0.0. No one put the fader in "Auditorium" it is on local mode.

I am suspecting it could be either the power supply or the encoder... Any one of you out there have any issue similar to this in the past?? If not then luckily there are other 650's on site I can sub parts around from...

Mark, I would bet that you've checked this but...

One of our remote units was not changing volume -- it was working fine one day and then...wasn't -- turned out the locking screw was loose and the knob was not engaging the shaft.

If you set a different volume on a format, does the volume change when you press that button or stays on 0.0?

There is no adjustment at all of the fader level on any function... zip. If you power the unit off for say an hour then turn it back on then it works again for a while... then goes back to 0.0 all on it's own again. I am suspecting the power supply is the issue on this one. I am heading to this site this morning so we'll see whats up with it....

I'm just going to throw this out there as a "wild card":

I had a 650 start acting flakey and finially totally lock
up at a film festival last year due to some sort of 'garbage'
coming in on the serial control port. Due to the temporary
nature of the set up there might have been loose connections
or ground loops, etc that at some point would put out just
the right combination of 'garbage bits' to confuse the 650
into locking up. But in our case, not only would the volume
go to "0" and the volume control knob not function, but we
also couldn't change formats.

If you cycled the power, it would work for an unpredictable
period and then often lock up again. Once we disconnected
the cable going to the serial control port, we had no further
problems.

Hi Jim,

No, There is no serial connection to this processor. I believe he could still switch modes. I just got back from there... These are older CP-650's that have bene in service for probably about 10 years. The only obvious thing I found was the air intake holes on the left side of the chassis were completely pluggged. Ditto for the other 5 units in this 8 plex. I had to pull the cases out of the rack far enough to be able to vaccum the side air intakes off. I also blew the dust off the boards while I was at it with some light compresssed air... but other than dirt I found nothing obvious. We'll see how it holds up over the weekend. The unit in question was turned on for the three hours I was in the booth today and never did what they claimed...

Mark, That's how it always works. The equipment knows when there is a tech in the booth and always plays friendly. Either that or the operators are just dumb. I had one theater call one weekend I was grilling out, family over, kids in the pool, just having a nice relaxing day. I had to go to the theater to fix a sound issue. I walked in wearing my swim trunks tank top and sandals. I saw the problem when I reached the top of the stairs. I walked over to the sound rack, turned the amps on, gave the manager a shitty look and walked out without muttering a single word. One hour of my life (drive time)wasted. [Mad]

Well, at least it wasn't a total waste of tmie as I did clean out all the chassis air intakes... The desert dust is not friendly to equipment...
