With AT power supplies becoming harder to find these days, I've been using ATX power supplies with a converter on the motherboard connector. The converters are available online for pretty cheap. They work quite nicely.

Mark, are you serious? I am all for saving a buck (especially when the expected remaining service time isn't all that long) but did you look carefully at the reviews for that PS (should be POS)?

One user reported a 30% (!) failure rate and others reported D.O.A. on more than one instance.

Power supplies are CRITICAL (you of all people should know that) for the safe and reliable operation of any computerized equipment.

That bargain PS isn't gonna be such a bargain if it either arrives dead or fails early. And if it fails in such a way that damages the DTS player...

Spend a few extra bucks and get a better PS..especially in a theatre open to the public. (If this is for a personal home screening setup then use whatever you want, and in which case this might be worth the risk.)

(There is a forum that discusses bad capacitors and they have links to reviews and tests of computer PSU's, they also have a thread which details which brands are good and which to avoid. I do not believe I can post a link to it without breaking the rules, so I will advise interested parties to do a Google search on bad capacitors.)

I bet one could hit thrift stores and yard sales to find old desktops, towers, and such for pennies just to rip out those AT power supplies - build a stockpile of them for the time being.

You can still get brand-new high-quality AT power supplies because they're used in industrial PCs with passive backplanes. Here's an example (didn't check if it would fit the DTS6D, just an example):

The units listed above in the link will fit both the DTS-6 and DTS-6D units.

Done plenty of these aftermarket swaps. Just have to modify the power switch cables to work with the case switch.

Yes but if 30% are coming DOA, you'd be better spending a few extra $ for something that'll work the first time.

Monte, The DTS name is no more in the Theater world, that part is correct, it is now called Datasat. Datasat will continue making (DTS) feature audio discs even after Harry Potter part 2. DTS logos on the end of film and on the discs no longer appear, they have now been replaced with the new Company name Datasat. Gossip and rumors are not fact, don’t be a part of spreading this type of misinformation, keep Film-Tech a responsible and reliable site for good information.

I will also add that DTS's great support has kept units operating now for about 18 years! You can still get just about any part you need to repair a unit thats down. Let this be a prime example of how just long thing's digital are capable of lasting!!

Indeed, DTS (now Datasat) support has been and is excellent. DTS gear is pretty rugged (Other than the power supplies, not really DTS' fault as they come from outside vendors).

Let's not forget that Dolby's gear has generally been very long-lasting as well so it's not just digital gear that is long lasting.

It's all a matter of sound design, quality control and support, areas that DTS and a few others are very good at.

True, I know about the name change - just got stuck with the name of "DTS" since I've around it since '93 with Jurassic Park and the old DTS-6,4channel units-a bit of a "purist" habit.

I brought this question up not to continue a rumor, but to get the correct answer from the right source to stop the rumor.
