I'm running a CP650 with a CE digital basement reader. Tonight I noticed that the 650 had reverted to SR and was faulting. This continued the duration of the film. I later ran a trailer group with the same results. The LED appears to be working fine and it was previously reading 0-3.

The odd thing is that when selecting format 10 the processor is automatically reverting - even without running film. It will read "Dolby Digital" only for a nanosecond - almost imperceptible - before reverting to SR. Does this sound like a problem with the processor?

Tim, first off, trying to select Format 10 without film running WILL result in an instant reversion.

I seriously doubt there is a problem with your CP 650.

What I think happened is someone knocked the LED for your digital out of alignment.

Careless threading can, if the LED mount was not tightened properly, rotate the LED out of line.

Best to call your tech in to realign it.

IF you have had experience working on the reader, you can try to CAREFULLY rotate the digital LED mount while a film is running to see if you can get it working again, watch the processors display (Lower right corner) and adjust for lowest possible error rate.

DO NOT try this if you are not absolutely sure which of the two LED mounts is the digital one, or you may also lose your analog optical sound!

Hi, Tony. Thank you, as always, for sharing your expertise. I should have known that the processor would default to SR without film, but it wakes up in non sync and automatically goes to digital when the film starts so I don't see this often.

On closer inspection it turns out that the lever that locks in the lateral guide roller (Simplex) was a bit sticky and I believe that the roller had become disengaged during the film (and my trailer run). With the pinch roller out it would not read the digital tracks but picked up the analog (albeit poorly). The film ran perfectly tonight with the error rate tracking mostly 2's and 3's. 'Back in business for a while!

As a tech, without actually being on-site (and sometimes even on site too) I tend to overlook the obvious.
