Yikes. Continuous showings 24 hours a day? I shudder to think how that sort of thing would work out with the current trend of under-staffing theaters to maximize profit. "What? Give the salaried managers time to go home and sleep? Hell, they can sleep on the weekend. Oh wait. They work the most on the weekends. Never mind. If they want to sleep they can just find a job some other place! Wow, our next quarterly report is going to look so good I might as well give myself a huge bonus right now!"

I remember seeing showtimes for "The Dark Knight Rises" in 15/70 IMAX at AMC Loews Lincoln Square in NYC go as far as 6:00 am. Although there are very few people in this age that handle film well, there are even fewer that can handle IMAX film well (the 15/70 type). If the managers don't have two trained IMAX projectionists working alternate shifts, then that print is damaged.

Although this is not the Large Format forum, I just wanted to put that in here. I wonder how El Con handled the 5/70 prints of "Return of the Jedi"...

I LOVED working those overnight shifts, especially since
I got paid time-&-a-half union scale for the late nite call.

One summer I made so much money running 'overnites' that I
was able to go out & buy a new car.

Yea- - many nites the shows between 3 & 8am were pretty
sparsely attended, but heck- - that wasn't MY problem.
They had to pay me even if nobody showed up.

If there was no show, I'd lock the booth door & take a nap.

UA Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood ran "Alien" when it opened on one of those 24 hour showing schedules in 70MM. And during "The Empire Strikes Back" the Egyptian ran 7 shows daily.

I'm sure most reasonable-thinking people already came to that conclusion after seeing the scans I had posted in that other thread. I think it bears repeating here, though, because (1) I find it disappointing the previous discussion thread got locked, (2) I find it unfortunate that some people refuse to recognize the unreliability of long-term memory, and (3) I felt it out of line that one person in particular accused me of fabricating information and lashed out at me for daring to challenge their memory with documentation and published information.

Jim, I didn't start this mess. What set this thing in motion was Tony's mistaken recollection of where he saw TRON, his mistaken recollection of which brand of projectors were installed at the Plitt El Dorado, and Will's erroneous claim that El Dorado was Tucson's only 70mm-equipped movie theater. The only thing I believe I'm guilty of is trying to resolve the matter. Tony acted like a jerk from the moment Mark Lensenmayer posted a link to one of my articles, which was intended to set the record straight and prevent a subsequent argument. He (and Will) should have conceded right then. If not then, then they certainly should have realized details were being misremembered once the newspaper ads and Dolby install info got posted.
