Experiment time.... Who remembers the summer of 1993 and, in particular, the release of Jurassic Park and introduction of DTS digital sound? I'm in the process of putting together a retrospective article on that movie, as this year is its 20th anniversary, and one of the things I wish to include is a list of the movie's DTS presentations. I've been fortunate to have been supplied a copy of the 1993 install records of DTS (Datasat) to help in my research. Unfortunately, the passage of time and ownership changes have created some challenging interpretations of the data, and I'd like to enlist your help.

I’ve found DTS’s records to be both incomplete and too long. Some DTS installations are clearly missing while other entries don’t belong because it would appear an installation took place later in 1993 for other movies. I suppose some of the entries may actually represent an install made for Jurassic Park mid-run. (Anyone involved with or recall a mid-run upgrade?) And since the company’s records were continually updated, there are some chain names and screen counts that may be different from when Jurassic Park played in 1993 as a result of an ownership change or renovation. I’ve corrected some of them, like the Edwards and United Artists theaters listed as Regal in the records, but I’m sure there are others.

The list as supplied to me is said to represent the DTS installations from the year 1993, which means any installs not made specifically for Jurassic Park need to be weeded out. As well, I think I've spotted some theaters I don’t think had been built as of 1993, so I'm not sure what would explain that. I’m also unsure what would explain any missing installations. (The only thing I can think of is the missing installs were of the Lt-Rt “DTS-S” version and didn’t get replaced with a six-track “DTS-6” unit until 1994 or later.) DTS's Terry Beard stated in interviews in '93 that the majority of the initial DTS installs were of the Lt-Rt version, so it might also be interesting to try to identify which were the six-track and which were the Lt-Rt versions (though this is a secondary goal of mine). I’ve already added in a handful of missing DTS engagements, but I suspect there are a lot more still unaccounted for.

At this time I'm presenting the list to you as raw as possible, except for transferring the data into a layout and stylization format that I like and making a few geographical corrections (and one intentional misspelling to outsmart the Film-Tech touchy-subject filter). I’ve excluded international installations for the time being preferring to focus on the United States and Canada. I'm grateful for the assistance I've received thus far from friends and colleagues including Film-Tech members Steve Guttag, Bobby Henderson, Mark Lensenmayer, and especially Daniel Schultz of Datasat. And I'll be grateful for any additional help I may receive.

A couple of caveats: I realize long-term memory is often unreliable, but please don't let that discourage you from commenting if you think you have any information relevant to the topic. I'm in the process of obtaining copies of the original newspaper promotion for as many markets as possible to compare and cross-check with the install records, but doing so is a long, slow process, and in the meantime I thought we could have a discussion in an attempt to start sorting out this mess. If you do provide information, please clarify whether your experience with DTS and Jurassic Park was as a moviegoer or as an industry professional (projectionist, installer, etc). Also keep in mind one of the problems associated with recalling early DTS presentations is that some non-digital theaters included the DTS presentation snipe in their presentation, misleading moviegoers into thinking they were a part of “The Digital Experience.” I also ask at this time that you please not share or post this list elsewhere as it is still very much a work-in-progress.

The Mayfair Theatre in Ottawa, Ontario had a DTS6 in 1993, they are still using it! but the Mayfair was second run then so it would have got Jurassic after it left the 1st runs.

In Bloomington, Indiana, the Kerasotes Showplace 6 opened Jurassic Park in DTS (I think it was full 6-track too, but will try to confirm). That site is now the AMC Showplace 11.

Jurassic Park rolled out DTS Digital Sound to the public, but it also unveiled the THX "Grand" trailer. It was pretty thrilling watching that snipe (as well as the original "Digital Experience" clip for DTS) at GCC Northpark #1 in Dallas.

I saw this in DTS at the Loews Freehold Metroplex in New Jersey; I don't remember which auditorium (I think it was one of the (at the time) THX auditoriums) and I don't know if that was the only one with DTS or if other auditoriums had it as well, but at least one did.

I don't know of any cinema in Niles, MI by that name.

The only one that I remember at the time was the Ready, which was sliced up from a single to a quad. It's being restored to a single as we speak.

I didn't see it here, but at the University Park East GCC. Pretty sure that was analog, based on the ad in the paper (which I can't seem to find).

If I get time, I'll see if the times for the Ready or this mystery cinema were in the South Bend Tribune.

Honolulu did not get DTS when JURASSIC PARK was released but got it almost a year later. I did however get to see the movie in DTS about a week after it had opened at the Kabuki 8 in San Francisco on my way home from a national photographers convention. I saw the movie again here in Honolulu in Dolby Surround at the Kahala #1 a few weeks later with the DTS intro trailer. Strange, they should show the trailer when the movie was not in DTS.

National Amusements Mt. Vernon Multiplex in Mt. Vernon VA was on the original release. They used to pay me to move the DTS 6 AND the DA10 in each of the northern VA locations so they would be in the auditorium that had the particular digital format...that went on for a while too.

I think it was the first Jurassic Park film, but one of the trailers before the film's release, Universal had added lights at the Uptown theater here in Washington DC to simulate 'lightning' effects during the trailer.

The lightning effects trailer was for the sequel, Lost World. They synchronized the lights using the same timecode track on the film print used to sync the DTS soundtrack.

IIRC the lightning effects thing was done with a trailer for the JP sequel The Lost World. DTS had some extra stuff that controlled how the strobe lights would flash in sync with the lightning on the screen.

The reason for this would be as such, Cineplex in Canada records all hardware (desk, chairs, lenses, platters, DTS units and such) with a Cineplex Odeon serial number. It is a small sticker that is placed on the hardware, for example, many theatres in the Toronto market that played during the Jurassic Park run are no longer operating. When the theatre closed, these units would frequently be moved.

So, the Queensway replaced Sherway, and the Queensway will look like it was the origin installation as DTS units from DTS Jurassic Park at Sherway were moved. Cineplex/DTS records do not reflect the move, but the unit still exists and it now appears in eyes of Cineplex/DTS that the unit originated from the Queensway.

Most companies have a database of equipment, if something gets moved then you will make the change in the database, but usually you would keep the origin location in there.

I can provide a few corrections in South Florida. The following DID NOT have DTS installed for Jurassic Park:

1) Boca Raton – General Cinema MISSION BAY PLAZA 8 (I was an assistant manager there when DTS was installed for "In the Name of the Father", we didn't play Jurassic Park)

2) Boca Raton – Wometco SHADOWOOD 12 (As an assistant manager across the street at Mission Bay Plaza 8 I was invited to the staff screening of Jurassic Park and it was THX/Dolby A. I went to UA Movies at Town Center later in the week to see it in DTS)

3) Coral Springs – General Cinema CORAL SQUARE 8 (I transferred to this location in 1994 and was there when DTS was installed for "Die Hard with a Vengeance" in 1995)

4) Plantation – General Cinema FOUNTAINS 8 (This location installed DTS for Schindler's List in December 1993. I went there to see the film and get a booth tour the week of the installation.)

The list they gave you seems WAY off as just this small sample shows locations that didn't have DTS until a year or two after Jurassic Park opened.

The Cineplex Beverly Center had but 13 screens in 1993, and DTS was permanently installed in Houses 1 and 2, plus a unit was shared between Houses 8 and 9.

However, as I have mentioned before elsewhere, the Beverly Center was one of the theatres chosen to be a DTS test locations in the months leading up to the June 1993 opening of Jurassic Park. I do remember Mr. Baseball, The Public Eye, Dr. Giggles, Trespass, Matinee, Mad Dog and Glory, and Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story were amongst those Universal titles we ran with DTS during the Fall and Winter of 1992 and the Spring of 1993. Other Universal titles may have been available to test in DTS, but we did have to split product with the GCC Beverly Connection, and I do not remember their having a DTS unit prior to Heart and Souls in August 1993.

In Haarrisburg PA Jurassic Park did not play first run at the Colonial Park 4.

It opened first run at the AMC Colonial Commons 9 which did install an early caddy version of the DTS 6 but I am not sure it was in place for JP.

Correction for Davis, CA (where I worked from 1991-2000) : Jurassic Park played at the Cinema 2 theater, not the Holiday Cinema. (It did move to the Holiday Cinema a couple months later, but there were no DTS systems at that theater yet.) Cinema 2 was a single-screen theater which is now gone. The DTS system installed there was initially just the 2-channel matrixed version, but was upgraded to 6-channel after the 2-channel system was discontinued.

I'd double check whether the UA Continental and the UA Midway (in Queens, NY) both played Jurassic Park at the same time. They're two blocks away from each other and I doubt that was the case.

East Brunswick and Edison Movie City Theatres were 4 channel DTS only with I believe was a CP50 with Cinemacannica V5 and Potts Platters. Both Theatres had the DTS installed in screen 1. Edison was using CP55s with Simplex 1050s on Strong X10 consoles and Alpha (Potts) Platters. Original players had the Caddy for the CD drives. East Brunswick Movie City had an extra theatre added on in a store room to get a 6th screen for that summer, knowing JP would be playing in the big house through out the summer. JP at East Brunswick played well into November. Edison's print moved over to the Woodbridge Movie City in Mono. I remember every show sold out for weeks at EB. I saw this on opening night at Menlo Park Cineplex to a sold out crowd. Theatre 4 was the screen with DTS. Menlo was also 4 channel sound with CP 55s, Simplex 1050s and Highlight 2 consoles-Alpha PlattersI remember the attached trailer was the Flinstones with the bouncing rock and the flying disc blew everyone out of their seats. It was one of those nights that stuck with me. Nevermind that summer. Edison Movie City is still there as an eight plex called Big Cinemas. Menlo is now a Dine In AMC Theatre, remodeled but original theatres are intact

Manny, I believe you are misremembering, as I was a manager at the Beverly Center 13 from September 1991 to June 1993, and I know for a fact we were testing DTS Unit #1 there from September 1992 to June 1993, and that unit remained in service until I closed the Beverly Center in June 2010.

My last night at the Beverly Center, ironically, ended with that opening midnight show of Jurassic Park, and it was the one and only time I ever got to see that first DTS trailer on the giant screen in House 1 during my time there, since all the test screenings did not have the trailer in front of it. The theatre was sold out, and the crowd wowed with the crispness of the digital sound in a THX house. It was the only time I was sad about leaving.

What movie were y'all testing it with?

Word on the street is that JP was the first DTS feature released to cinemas with DTS sound. So either Spielberg slipped you guys a copy of JP -- while he was still filming in September of 92 -- or you guys played Dr. Giggles for 10 months.

Question for installers from that era: Were DTS units even shipping as early as Sept 1992?

Prior to that midnight screening, how many "test screenings" of JP did you do? And why not run it with the trailer? Wasn't JP delivered with the damn thing attached? I distinctly remember that being an issue because analog theatres got to play the trailer too.

The first DTS players I saw were in Spring of 1993. I remember the trailer for JP was in DTS and was to be used as a test run of the system prior to playing the feature. That is, we got the players in advance of JP...then when the trailer hit the streets...discs were issued and theatres were to run the trailer in DTS to flesh out any issues that may have been in the system.

Despite the massive roll-out of a new system prior to a specific feature, it was one of the most well laid out/prepared that I have seen. I think the biggest thing they mis-predicted was the 2-Channel versus 6-channel popularity. At the very low price of DTS...they were going in FAST. There was a breakout board for just about anything being used in the day.

Here are a few that I have. I apologize for the shitty quality; the printer wasn't working too well the day these were obtained and so I took photos directly off the microfilm reader's screen using my cell phone camera. In most of these cases you'll notice differences between the DTS presentations identified in the ad and those identified on the DTS install list, supporting my contention the DTS install list is incomplete.

If anyone is willing to hunt online or pay a library a visit and make some scans of "Jurassic Park" ads, please consider doing so and posting them here (or send them to me via email). Thanks.

Here's an ad for the Dallas market (clipped from The Dallas Morning News) in July 1993, several weeks into the Jurassic Park run.

I really could not stand how "The Digital Experience" logo was bastardized in various ways. The proper version of it was pretty cool looking, but it didn't work all that well at small point sizes and didn't fit into long rectangular blocks that were common in newspaper stack ads. So we got the kind of eyeball poison shown in the ad above, or other goofed up versions of it like the one seen in the Jurassic Park end credits on DVD.

The DTS logo wasn't as cool looking as The Digital Experience logo, but it worked better at small sizes and fit that rectangular kind of motif.

Jurassic Park played in both auditoriums of the GCC Northpark 1-2. Both shows were in DTS-6 format. The #1 screen was THX certified. JP held both screens for roughly 2 months. By the way, the sound in the #2 house was very good. Not quite as powerful as the #1 screen, but it did sound better than a lot of THX certified theaters I've visited.

IIRC, Heart & Souls took over the #1 screen in mid August. I can't remember if Hard Target played at the Northpark as well. But I seem to remember Jurassic Park playing on the #2 screen there for a few more weeks.

I remember it opening in London at the Empire, but I didn't see it. The next film in it was Schlindler's List, which I did see. I can't remember the first film I saw in Dolby Digital, but I saw a demonstration of it during a lecture at the NFT. I've only ever heard SDDS once, Mary Shelly's Frankenstein at the Odeon Marble Arch, since divided up into several auditoria. I never heard CDS

Don't those newspaper ads look dated now?

How widely used was DTS-S? I never saw, or heard, it anywhere.

Here's a few more for corrections for Ontario.

Toronto – Cineplex Odeon EGLINTON TOWNE CENTRE CINEMAS - Not Open Yet

Toronto – Cineplex Odeon SHEPPARD CINEMAS (Sheppard Grande) - Not Open Yet

These Three were opened within a couple years of Sheppard Grande Cinema. It was a big expansion by Cineplex. I don't believe that any of them would have been open either as Sheppard was opened in 1999.
