Isn't the filter tied to Format 1? What if you create a format, base it on Format 2 (Dolby Mono), but go back and turn off NR before saving?

I don't think you can do that on CP500/650, tried to do something like it but it wasn't possible, since all "optical" presets are pre formated, one thing is maybe possible....to play it in bypass mode, because i think than you just have pure mono (L+R) from projector soundhead to center speaker.

How about pre-amp outputs, or test points if those processors don't have them, to non-sync inputs, with matrix on or off as required.

I wasn't suggesting altering an existing format; that's not allowed. I meant to create a user format and copying from Format 2 to save time. But that's not possible either as Dolby Mono is not offered, at least on my 500's software.

So I tried this: Create a user format (and assign it to a button). Source: optical; NR = off; Decode = Mono.

Alas, this is a no go. It is when the you set it to mono that the filter kicks in. I could hear it running a pink noise loop. I will have to see if it does this even if the source is an NS input.

But for now I'd say make a format as described but with decoding set to Pro Logic but turn off the other amps. Another possibility would be L/R Direct but use the output matrix to map either L or R to C. You cannot combine them there.

The CP500 has all these wonderful customization capabilities; I wonder why it does not offer Format 2?

By the way, I don't believe there is any way to create a custom format on the CP650, so all of these tricks only apply to the 500. It's a shame they removed that ability. It was quite handy.
