One of the top platters on my AW 3 makes a noise similar to the playing card in the bicycle spokes when I turn it by hand when threading. Do I need to be concerned?

Seriously though, hold the motor away from the edge of the deck and spin it. Sound still there?

Remove the brain. Sound still there?

Check the drive tire. If it is a white one, it could be leaving pieces of the tire on the deck. I have had to clean the white material off of many platter decks.

Don't forget about the motor/brushes. Prop the motor off the deck and spin it either by hand or via the make up table.

One has to isolate just where the noise is actually coming from.

Yes, just brush noise or a badly worn commutator or both. You could swap the top and bottom motors around since it seems the bottom gets used much less. The top and center get used the most. Just re-check the timing after you move them.
