They look normal to me - what oddness do you see?
These are basicly SA projectors with the motor plates removed. I don't recall what the "M" means - water cooled gate maybe? Regardless, there are many Century projectors where the nameplate doesn't match the actual configuration - Wolk and others rebuilt hundreds of used projectors - and if a direct drive double shutter unit went in, it would probably come out as a standard SA bearing the original nameplate designation.

What is the thing under the motor mount on the bottom machine? Some sort of encoder for use with a dubber or 3D interlock? Or a separate drive motor for the takeup mechanism?

That "thing" under the motor is the left spindle side of the Newmade rewind table it's sitting on.

Looks like the seller plopped them down to take their picture for Ebone. Probably taken out from a digitally converted cinema or a closed due to inability to convert cinema.

No, you're not an idiot! I also thought it some sort of interlock contrivance at first. Then I realized these are sitting atop a Neumade rewind table.
