Hi

I am in the process of renovating a Victoria 5, I am pretty much finished and ready to give it a first run!!

I am a little puzzled by the take up reel system. It seems that the motor in the pedestal base is simply a direct drive motor that is connected directly to the reel spindle. I have run the motor which seems to spin quite fast. Surely there must be some speed control to compensate for how full the reel is?

Any advice would be great.

You have probably a Torque motor (aka a constant stall) motor
They are designed to deliver a constant amount of torque no matter what speed they run at and under no load they can spin like a bat out of hell so be carefull

That is interesting. I have only seen vic 5 with belt driven friction take up.

I have given the projector a run and you are correct, the reel does spin incredibly fast but kind of seems ok when film is attached.

It seems that the motor had some sort of clamp on the back maybe to limit the speed??

Can this type of motor be used with a motor drive/inverter to limit the speed?

I have that type of take up on my Portacine, and it works very well. It needs to be able to go fast in the beginning, when the reel is empty, especially if you use a reel with a small hub. So I don't think it would be wise to try to limit the speed. As long as the torque is correct (i.e. weak enough not to rip the film apart, but strong enough to wind tightly), you're good.

UNTIL FILM RUNS OUT OR BREAKS! If you're not by the projector when film runs out you can get a full 6000' reel spinning at that crazy max speed, which is definitely not safe. I'm thinking of building a simple fail-safe device for my Portacine for this reason.

Thanks for your reply, in fact I have ordered a capacitive proximity sensor to see if will act as a film sensor to stop the motor.

I wil post on here how it goes.
