For years, I've used ORC-1600 lamp houses, one is the "X-35," model with the white connector cables and slightly older rectifier. The other I run is the newer XPS-16 with the newer cable hardness and just model 1600, no X-35. From what I can tell, they are nearly identical.

While I knew the lamps were getting old, they struck every time and I was holding off on replacing them (I have spares). During some recent renovations, I hadn't turned it on in about 2 months.

Today, I struck the lamp first to a "click - click," and no ignition. I checked the wiring to the outlet and tried again. This time, a flash of light from the lamp and "poof," a large cloud of white smoke came out of the exhaust and the smell of burnt electronics came about. Naturally, I tried again and got the same result. No sustained lamp output.

I powered down and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary - but am baffled. I see no blown diodes or caps and it will momentarily ignite.

I'm open to any and all advice. I'd like to keep these running until I can find super lumex houses or something more modern that can run on 110/220 single phase.

Also, are these rectifiers and lamp houses interchangeable if the jumpers are set the same?

Check the blocking diode. It is also possible a main electrolytic vented, hence all the white smoke but nothing obviously wrong...
