Does anyone out there know/remember what the correct weight oil is one would put in a Bauer B-6? A friend recently acquired one and he wants to be sure he puts in the correct oil...

Over the years we had a lot of discussion on that topic in the German forum.

At the moment it seems that most people agree that you have to use unalloyed SAE 30 oil. It may contain anti-foaming agent.

To be completely candid, unless Mark's friend is gonna be grinding out 5 shows a day, 365 days a year, with a 4k or higher lamp behind it, the oil choice is really not that critical at all.

Of course you don't want to run a heavy oil in a projector designed for light oil (or vice-versa) but in the grand scheme of things a quality oil of any brand or type (note I said TYPE, not viscosity/weight) will work well and the projector will still outlive it's owner.

A 30w generic non-detergent oil sounds like it would be a good choice based on Fabien's post.

In my service days I've seen Simplexes run well on Simplex Oil, Century Oil (a bit thicker than Simplex oil), Auto transmission fluid(!)(it was a good choice because of the anti-shear additives), one location even ran vegetable oil for many years..and yes it smelled bad even though they changed it every other month and yes the intermittent did wear out faster than normal, but not at a "run 10 shows and it will seize up" rate. (Yes, I did clean and flush out the projector and switched them to Simplex oil...) The owner also discovered that buying one can of Simplex oil which would last 2-3 years of oil changes was cheaper than running to the grocery store every other month, lol.

Since we are in an era where film is almost as rare as VHS any projector still running today has a good shot at "never" wearing out. [Big Grin]

Well, he tried SAE 40 weight oil in it and that seems kind of heavy to me. He claims that's what they were using at the theater these were installed in. Its just too thick in my mind for the intermittent and I know U-2's didn't use this heavy an oil. Even 30 weight seems a bit heavy but I will refer that to him to try.

Never but Never put transmission fluid in Pro 35's. That ruins the O-rings and seals pretty quickly. My last employer went around and did this to about a dozen Pro-35's and it more or less ruined them. The leaks were so bad that rebuilding them was also too expensive and digital was close at hand, so we replaced all the Pro-35's in this chain with Christie pulls from doing other Digital Conversions.

The rubber parts have to be of the correct type of rubber for this to work with Tranny fluid.
