Sharing new (work-in-progress) article about the Director's Cut re-release of "Lawrence of Arabia." For my generation this was the first opportunity to see this great film in a theater. (I saw it at the sadly-demolished Century Plaza in L.A.)

Article feedback and moviegoing reminiscences encouraged, of course. And, in particular, did anyone attend a screening or project the film in 1989 in any of the locales listed in the "unaccounted for" section at tail end of article?

“Newly restored director’s cut in 70mm Dolby Stereo”

The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter presentations of “Lawrence of Arabia” in North America during its Director’s Cut re-release. The film’s 70mm prints consisted of full-frame imagery from Super Panavision photography. The audio was Six-Track Dolby Stereo (“SR” encoded “baby boom” format).

The “Lawrence of Arabia” re-release was among two classic re-releases and eighteen confirmed first-run films released in 1989 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. The Sam Spiegel production and Columbia release was directed by David Lean and starred Peter O’Toole, Alec Guinness and Omar Sharif. (The Academy Award-winning film was originally released in 1962.)

Prior to release, the film re-premiered in New York at the Ziegfeld on February 4th; in Washington, DC at the Uptown on February 5th; and in Los Angeles at the Century Plaza on February 12th.

The duration of the engagements (measured in weeks) has for some entries been included in parenthesis following the cinema name.

There's a legendary story about what happened to the print of Lawrence that ran at the Hollywood Fairfax Cinema in June of 1989. There was once a Los Angeles based film collector named Al Beardsley who ran the Sunset Screening Room and who traded and sold film prints to other collectors. He had a guy on the line who really wanted a 70mm print of the picture, so on the day after the Fairfax run he put on a generic looking uniform and put a magnetic sign on his van that said "ACME FILM SHIPPING' or somesuch thing. He drove it up to the Fairfax and asked for the print, and they handed it to him, and he sold it to his customer. I won't say where, but I have an idea that a print that I have seen projected within the last few years is the one in question, and it looked great. Beardsley, though, wound up getting involved with O.J. Simpson in a sports memorabilia scam and, like O.J., got put away for awhile.

I saw the limited engagement of Lawrence in 70mm at the Century 14 in Sacramento (on Arden Way, since torn down for a newer cinema building). Don't remember the date it opened, other than it was in 1989. It was an extra credit assignment for my AP European History class.

Those of you who are projectionists will have this handily beat. But I can safely say I've seen "Lawrence" in 70mm more in more venues and more than any other movie:
1989 - SamEric in Philadelphia, now gone (sadly) as it was a great first-run house and saw several 70mm releases there while a grad student
c 1990 - a revival screening in Century City, but not sure which screen
c. 1997 - at the Cinerama Dome
2018 - Egyptian from new 4K digital-out negative

Steve G can probably tell you with certainty, but unless 70mm was installed after I left in 1985, the Avalon didn't 70mm.

The Avalon had 70mm installed (Century JJ) in or about 1985. It went in at the same time as the [H**, 4***] system. I believe the debut movie on the new system was actually 35mm digital of Fantasia using an interlocked VHS machine that carried the stereo PCM tracks. This was the remixed, new recording, of Fantasia.

That helps a bit...seems that around the time of JBL's announcement of their latest and greatest (the aforementioned banned term, which I struggle to recall at this time) I do recall a certain technician referred to that company thereafter as "Gerbil".

Michael... We also ran it at The Strand Theater in Manitowoc, WI on screen 4 for 4 weeks in late 1989. Sorry I do not have the exact dates.
Thats the place the film delivery guy threw all the cans off the back of the truck into the street.
