Hello friends, I have several DTS discs in several languages ​​of the same movie, I have verified that the id number of the movie is different in each language, so you can not play a disc with a movie from another country.
I use foobar2000 to play the aud files and see the id number.

I guess that the only realistic option nowadays is to convert the original DTS discs into wav and try to find a sync mechanism between a projector and a PC audio player. Do you have a real DTS timecode reader, or a DTS player? I guess mere mortals won't get a chance to create DTS discs that play on DTS hardware players.

It's probably worth mentioning that afaik the theatrical DTS (now Datasat) APTX-100 codec and the consumer Coherent Acoustics codec that appears on Blu-ray don't actually have a lot in common other than the branding. I doubt it'd be any easier to use this as a source to create theatrical DTS discs than, say, uncompressed PCM.

The DTS reader just receives power and delivers a TTL-like simple pulse signal (following the optical short/long timecode track). The DTS-6D manual has a basic schematic.
It shouldn't be complicated to feed it into available ports of common computers. Then someone would have to develop a decoder for the timecode. Not too complicated, I guess, but someone has to do it. Once you get a timecode signal, you could sync original DTS discs converted to WAV, or play a homecinema DTS/AC3 track using the same method. One would need a suitable sync point, but that should be trivial compared to the timecode decoder. It's not space technology, but it seems no one has done it. Most people seem to be fine to buy used DTS players.

I haven't seen anything on the net regarding decoding of DTS optical timecode. I would think that it is quite similar in complexity to SMPTE timecode.

Kieran - cinema DTS sound is no longer with DATASAT. They 'outsourced' it to Inventure Studios.

Yes, I have done this in Special Venue 15/70 systems before. You have to have a shaft encoder attached to a drive gear or sprocket on the projector and run the shaft encoder at the required number of turns per frame of film. The shaft encoder ttl output feeds the DTS Time Code Generator and the output of the generator feeds the DTS player. Its pretty easy once you get the shaft encoder turns per frame working right. you can set the required time code start time for a given movie. They are not all the same... So that part you are going to have to figure out.

Ordinarily the DTS Serial Number remained the same across various versions of a film. The only reason DTS would have issued separate serial numbers is if various versions of the movie were different *cuts* and would thus have sync problems if you tried to play a different language track with the OV picture.

Good point, that was one of the advantages of DTS - the ability of changing the language by swapping the disks.

I am curious to see this foobar software - WinAMP used to have a plugin to run non-encrypted tracks. Do you need a plugin?

Yes, there is a foobar2000 plugin on sourceforge - it seems it can deal with 'encrypted' DTS discs as well. I don't know wether it's advisable to keep this low profile. I guess no one is using it for pirating, so, it's more for 'academical purposes' anyway...

Any opinion on that, Daniel?

The only specific need most people want a PC player of DTS theatrical audio files is:

*Buy a bluray of a movie
*Rip the video from it
*Rip the DTS theatrical audio discs
*Marry the two in an editing program
*Export the new file
*Author a bluray disc
*Burn those files to a bluray blank (or a USB stick, etc)

Why all of this effort? It's to get rid of those godawful "near field" remixes on blurays that are the worst thing to ever happen to movie sound, yet the studios have been scammed and brainwashed into thinking they need to do it by various audio engineers and audio post-production houses desperately seeking work.

Well, I no longer speak officially for anyone involved, but as observed upthread, the old DTS theatrical format is now supported thirdhand by Inventure Studios (who have licensed the technology from Datasat, who acquired it back when they bought the DTS Digital Cinema division from DTS). I think it's all sufficiently removed from today's reality of Digital Cinema and most content being watched via streaming services anyway that no one's getting bent about someone hacking the old DTS disc encryption.

As to the *why* - Brad is probably correct when he observes it's in many cases the only way to listen to the original theatrical mix in a home theater. I don't share his antipathy towards near field remixes; YMMV.

If you are ever in the position of being able to directly compare a 35mm print with DTS, SRD or SDDS against a bluray near field remix, you will totally understand why the near field remixes are total garbage. [Wink]

It's home video, and these discs are simply not made for people who play them on high-end cinema-type audio systems, but for mainstream flat screen tv sets and soundbars, and it does make sense to adjust them for these typical playback conditions, it's a question of majority. Same as the colorspace for Bluray is reduced to rec.709 and not P3.

Yes, it would probably be best to put the nearfield mix on DVDs and Blurays as the default/first audio track in AC3, and add the original theatrical mix as e.g. dts HD. No one concerned about playback performance would care to be forced into switching over or to buy dts HD or TrueHD capable equipment.

My intention is not to put the DTS audio on a bluray or DVD, I have a Kinoton FP30D equipped with a DTS reader, I have a DTS XD10 and a DTS-6D, I have 35mm movies from other countries (Russian, English) and I would like I can put the audio in Spanish, I have some DTS discs of my movies in English and I would like to be able to change the audios of this album to Spanish in some way, since the DTS discs in Spanish I can not find them anywhere. This is why I ask if someone knows how to put audio files in some processor of these, I have the wav removed from the bluray and I would like to hear them at the same time I project my 35mm movie. This is why someone knows how to pass wav to aud, and if someone knows how to connect the DTS reader to a player or PC.

In this case you can get a piece of software (see below) that will allow you to sync playback to a bi-phase signal/SMPTE time code, or a physical player (TASCAM made a model of CD player that did this) and a bi-phase encoder and time code generator.

See here for info on bi-phase rotary encoders

The caveat is that if the source material and the print do not match frame for frame then you will lose sync. Any splices or film breaks that result in lost frames will also cause a loss of sync.

Use the encoder coupled to your projector to drive the time code generator and use your audio in whatever format your software or hardware uses. In this case not only is DTS unnecessary but it will be an impediment to what you are trying to accomplish.

It looks like there is a peice of software available that will take in a bi-phase signal, generate timecode, and play a media file back to that time code. I have not used this application so YMMV;

To add to this comment: Sadly, the public that plays these garbage field remixes of the feature on a continual basis in their homes, then comes to our locations to witness what we present on the screen, makes the decision to complain that our sound isn't the best, and even isn't the same as their systems at their homes.

We've even received recommendations that they the people who did their hone installs, make a visit to our location to see what can be done to improve the sound that these, the public are hearing so it can match the garbage they're hearing at their homes.

Yet, it's fun in a way, to educate them that we were first in this multichannel cinema sound and doing it as its supposed to be.

Basically a near field mix if one that has been "dumbed" down at a much lower volume level for home speakers with the goal of keeping the dialogue at a level that is easy to hear. As one remixer put it...."so you can talk on the phone and still hear the dialogue without all the other noise......"

If you have a hex editor you can change the serial number and reel number of each file. The first 92 bytes are a header.

Location 78 or 0x4E is the reel number
Location 80 and 81 (0x50 and 0x51) are the serial number

Another little tidbit in dealing with DTS timecode that may be relevant...

Back when they changed the format of the .aud files to .aue on the newer disks, they changed the way that the timecode was printed to the film. The serial number of the feature used to appear at regular intervals in the timecode but it was changed to an arrangement that was encoded in such as way as to prevent the player from reproducing the content if the serial number arrangement in the timecode wasn't correct. It was some sort of binary encoding because the frequency of the serial number occurrences was in factors of 2. Sometimes is was every 4, 8, or 16 frames and I didn't have the time or patience to try and figure it out. I had a DTS timecode generator that I would use for testing DTS units on the bench and needed to use old discs because the new timecode security scheme was never released for the timecode generator. I was dealing directly with the timecode generator manufacturer and once we started delving too deeply into it, we received a DMCA notice and all work on the project stopped. After that I just defaulted to the Titanic sound track because it was released before the security scheme and used three discs so I could exercise three drive units and monitor for drop outs. I have that soundtrack darned near committed to memory. [Smile]

If the reels are the same edit and someone has just changed the serial number for another country then changing the serial number in the file will make the DTS sound match the reel.

Hey Greg if you are looking for a timecode generator I have a program I wrote in python that will make a Raspberry Pi output a DTS track that can be plugged into the DTS reader input on any DTS player. I've only tested it with older movies but it is completely customizable. Can program a serial cue whenever you want.

I'm curious about the serial number security feature; did it just prevent playback or what happened when it didn't get the right arrangement? Did it happen at the start of a reel or random places?

That's interesting Greg because I have been able to play newer releases like "Dunkirk" and "The Master" using a DTS TC generator. However as I mentioned before you have to select and arm each reel I don't remeber but I think that was also the case with older disks too?

This would make some degree of sense according to what Greg is saying, as the discs for Dunkirk (at least the ones we have here) have the .AUD format files on them. Perhaps they decided that piracy was not so much of an issue nowadays given how niche the DTS system has become.

Theoretically, but it's risky. If you're playing a DTS track in a different language to the analog one on the print, then if anything happens to stop the digital playback and it defaults to SVA, you're buggered.

It happened to me in the mid-1990s, with an entirely forgettable movie called Dante's Peak. We were asked in advance by the distributor if we had DTS playback capability, and replied that we did. The print arrived with instructions that we should play the DTS audio only. I thought something was funny when I noticed that the print was made by Geyer, and the cans and head leaders were all in German.

So halfway through the show I'm attending to another screen, and an usher runs in and tells me that "there's a problem in 2 ... they've all started talking in German." Long story short - for some reason that I was never totally able to figure out, the DTS dropped out and it started to play the SR, which was a German dub.

I later found out the back story. Shipping delays meant that there weren't enough ex-US prints in England in time for the opening day, so the distributor had scrounged a few from Germany at the last minute (where the movie had bombed, so there were hundreds of unneeded ones), which had been sent, with UK DTS CDs, to the British screens that were DTS capable.

I just tried to change reel numbers on a foreign version film where reel 1+6 where encoded as reel12+13.and It worked.
reel1(12)is though much out of sync.
so is there a way to change the offset in the file as well?

If the player didn't receive timecode with the correct arrangement of serial number frames, the player would begin playback at the start of the reel and then drop out after a very short time. It would continue to read the timecode as valid but the disc wouldn't play.

The issue was only present on the discs with the .aue audio files. Any of the older .aud files would playback with no issue using the bog standard DTS timecode.

If memory serves, you also needed to have the ver 1.46 EEPROM on the timecode board for them to play but don't quote me on that.

AUD/AUEs header specs:
Pos 75: print's optical noise reduction *
Pos 78: reel number
Pos 80-81: serial
Pos 82: number of channels
Pos 92-94: AUE key

* the format to switch back when dropping out of DTS:
value 00 Dolby A
value 01 Dolby SR
value 02 Academy
value 80 Nonsync at any position of the reel
value 81 Nonsync within the last minute of the reel, usually used for the last reel

@Gorges: Use a simple HEX Editor to edit.

I have a question, if I change the serial number to 0, the audio can be played in test mode.
Is there a series that reproduces as a test synchronized with the film, whatever the series of the film?

If you change the serial on the files to zero the disc should play with any print ignoring the print's serial. Doesn't make any sense to me. What do you wanna do?

Note that all feature files on the disc MUST have the same serial, in your case all to zero except S/N 1045 for Reel14 and 1004 for Reel15.

If you want to make a disc to play without timecode (in case you don't have the print) just replace the first 6 letters of the header to "SETUP ". This creates a selfplay file.

Hello friends, here I have another problem, to see if anyone knows anything about this:
I bought a DTS XD10 processor and this contained about 20 dts copied to your hard drive, I can play them with the processor and the 35mm movie perfectly.
I extracted the hard drive and copied all the content so I could copy the .aud to other people, but when I try to play the .aud with foobar2000, at minute 2 "this starts a protection and sounds are heard.
Does anyone know how to remove that protection from these files?
Here I put a file of Harry Potter 5, reel 8, and also another file that bears the same name that is in another folder.

That's an AUE file even when the extension is AUD. Rename to .AUE and foobar plays fine.

That info for the DTS header is excellent. The AUE key looks like it is 01 at offset 92 and then a 16 bit number that is the key. Do you have any idea how the DTS timecode uses or reads that key?

I have access to a print that has a set of DTS AUE discs. I'm gonna check the head of a reel and see if I can spot any strange DTS blocks. If Greg is right that after a short time it does not get the correct info it drops then the info must be at the head of the reel somewhere.

Yes, 01 set at 92 indicates that the file is encrypted, 93-94 is the 16 bit key.

The key is stored in the print's timecode by re-appearing of the serial-block in a certain pattern to match the key stored in the AUE file. This prevented the audio to be pirated by just using a timecode generator connected to a DTS unit.

As far as I know encrypted files run on 1.46 only since the TC sends a pattern to match the key. I would be surprised if the encryption process was implemented on previous versions already.

I have tested my timecode generator on an AUE print and can confirm that the DTS6 and the XD10 both drop out after approximately 2 minutes if it does not receive the correct AUE key.

I have also inspected the 35mm print and its DTS timecode and discovered that the serial number blocks appears at very strange intervals. Normally the DTS timecode has a serial number block every 4,8,16 or 32 frames. Usually 4 at the head and tail of a reel and 32 in the middle. Below is the frequency that I discovered. Anyone notice a pattern?

4,16,8,8,16,12,4,16,4,12,12,4,4,12,8,4,4,16,12,4,4,12,4,8,4,4,8,4,8,4,4,4,4,8,8,8,12,4,4,12,8,8,8,4,4,12....

If somebody likes to figure it out, here is what I got so far.

Since foobar is capable of decrypting AUEs without the print's frequency of serial blocks the key stored in 93-94 must be all it needs to decrypt it.

AUE file compared to same decrypted file:
Key in Hex: 54/08
Key in Dec: 84/08

AUE/AUD Stream Comparison
(I included the image as a link because of it's vertical length)

That is a short piece of stream at position 30,072,332 (~2 minutes into the file) where the encryption starts.
From there every 320 bits a new cycle of encryption starts by encrypting the first 80 bits only (for each channel) and just 8 bit of the 16 bit stream (red markings in the picture).

In this case the difference between encrypted bits and decrypted bits in the first pattern is: 33/-233 and for the following: 36/-220. Then it repeats as you can see in the image.

Anyone noticed the spread is always 256? Interesting number.

33/-233 and 36/-220 is defined by the AUE's key. Initially when encrypting: To increase or decrease the 8 bits depends if the original uncrypted 8 bits + 33 still fits within 8 bits, otherwise -220 (or vice versa in case the number of in- or decrease is exactly the bit's value).

The question is: How is 33/-233 and 36/-220 related to 54 08.

If someone wants to know the print's serial block frequency or needs the files just let me know.

I think you are on to something. How did you get the correct values (33 and 36) to insert to make the file work properly? Maybe the AUE key works with the serial number to create the decrypt values. What was the serial number on the file.
If we tried a bunch of AUE discs with known solutions we would eventually see a pattern. I'm really curious how you found the correct decrypt bits.

The serial of the file in the sheet is 10057. But the encryption is not related to the serial. When I change the original file's serial to something else it still plays fine with foobar.

I can manipulate the whole header except 92-94 and the decryption still works.

It looks like at the end of the AUE file, after the missed change over beep, there is that same pattern that is used to decrypt the file. Could those values be used to add to the file to decrypt it?

I think the pattern at the end is just encrypted silence, so there are only the values for encryption visible. If you delete the second half of an AUE file via HEX editor it still plays fine till the cut.

To me there is nothing more than pos 93 and 94 to decrypt the AUE. 01 @ 92 just indicates the file is encrypted.

I love that film. The very definition of popcorn entertainment and a throwback to the old-fashioned disaster movie, down to the "no one listens to the scientist who knows better until it's too late" plot line.

I felt Linda Hamilton and Pierce Brosnan had very nice chemistry as a couple as well.
