Coming soon to a theatre near you another screen format system.
Time to dig out the cinema attic/ceiling and go tall.
Was this a April fools day joke? Seems like Alamo Draft House is putting in this 50' tall screen in their new cinema in LA.
Will be available to other circuits and companies also. They turn the Barco projector sideways and go high.
I still like CinemaScope® wide films on a curved screen.
This may work if they use the height only in parts of a film when you need to use It and shoot tall.
Pan & Scan may come back! How many people will have neck pain looking up after 2 hours?

Perhaps the TV manufacturers can get in on the act also so viewers can fill the screen with their photos and videos taken on mobile phones in portrait mode.

Or maybe the whole idea is play to those phone users who observe the world vertically.

I've got a far better idea: Instead of rotating the screen by 90 degrees, let's rotate the seats by 90 degrees.

Oh dear ... they appear to be suffering from Vertical Video Syndrome!

It is a problem when someone takes a cellphone video that later needs to be shown on a TV or theater screen. Much of the footage in the Cat Video Fest DCP showreel was pillarboxed vertical cellphone videos. Of course Sod's Law dictates that these were also the best videos, in terms of their actual content.
