Gateway Film Center in Columbus has announced on its webpage that they will be showing THE AERONAUTS in 70mm starting December 6, 2019.

They are 70mm equipped. I agree, it is strange that there has been so little mention of this movie in 70mm. I have heard of a possible booking in the Chicago area, but nothing else.

Was supposed to have been an Imax exclusive release, but Amazon's plans changed.

The movie was reportedly shot with IMAX film cameras. But put through a 4K digital intermediate. I suspect quite a lot of "digital backlot" work in this show. And that could mean a lot of 2K CGI up-rezzed to 4K. I'm pretty suspicious of movies shot on 65mm film these days.

It was shot digitally with the Red Monstro 8k imager with a 4k post. I'm very confused on why there would be any prints made and there is no mention of prints being made online anywhere else.

In NYC, it's only being shown at a few independent cinemas. None of the chains have picked it up, presumably because Amazon won't give theaters a full exclusive window. I guess the independents are thinking, "Screw it, we'll take what we can get" but I think they signed a suicide pact.

So far as I can tell, here in Los Angeles there is one single performance in 70mm at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica (Monday, Dec. 16, free with RSVP.) Would love to go but not the time of year I can attend evening shows. Hope they repeat it someday.

By the way, is this just being booked as a boutique Academy-qualifying run? Almost nowhere is this playing full-time, like 2 screens in all of Los Angeles county.

Aren't these 70mm struck from a 4K DI? Whats so exciting about that? Smaller scratches, less dust and the same resolution as a well made 35mm print struck from the the same 4K D.I. file.

Mark, the only thing exciting about it is that it's film. There are no 35mm prints to my knowledge.

Yah, possibly less of that stuff, but a 35mm print fresh from the lab doesn't usually have lots of dust and scratches right out of the cans and if the projectionists know what they are doing, they won't be adding that to the print. 70mm will does allow for a bit better color saturation, so you can give it that, but that certainly isn't the impressive difference that we'd get between a 70mm and 35mm presentation in the golden era of the Roadshows.
