The American Cinematheque in Los Angeles is seeking a full-time head projectionist to oversee the projection staff at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood (2 screens: 616 seats and 77 seats) and the Aero Theatre (425 seats) in Santa Monica. Weekly duties will include: projecting for Cinematheque programs and outside rentals (festivals, premieres etc.); general booth upkeep and general maintenance of film projectors (Norelco 35/70) and digital projectors (Barco DP4K-30L laser, NEC 2500S and NEC 3240S), servers and sound equipment; scheduling for the projection staff at both theatres. Extensive experience required.

Applicant must have flexible availability including nights and weekends. Screenings are typically held Wed. – Sunday at both theatres and occasionally Mon.-Tuesday. Work hours will be approx. 40 hrs./week with occasional overtime. The successful applicant will be required to join the IATSE Local 33 union in Los Angeles, if (s)he is not already a member.

This position calls for applicants with:

1) Advanced technical skills and experience as a projectionist in both analog and digital cinema. Must be able to project changeovers for 35mm and 70mm.

2) Calm, cool and friendly demeanor working in an often high-stress environment.

3) Ability to troubleshoot and fix problems under pressure.

4) Must be a team player in a fast-paced environment, who can collaborate and communicate with the Cinematheque’s Programming, Print/Digital Delivery and Theatre Management Departments.

5) Professional and easygoing attitude in working with outside clients including festival contacts (TCM Festival, AFI Festival, etc.), studio PR and Technical departments, visiting filmmakers etc.

6) Ability to correctly identify various film and sound formats (including obscure and now-obsolete formats), and aspect ratios, properly handle archival film prints and perform minor repairs on prints as needed.

7) Ability to perform regular maintenance on film and digital projection equipment (i.e. replacement of xenon bulbs, cleaning and replacing air filters, oil and coolant changes, light output checks etc.)

8) Strong organization skills in scheduling a multi-person projection staff operating at two theatres in Los Angeles.

9) Ability to occasionally create DCPs of alternative content materials provided by distributors and/or programming partners.

Essential Experience required:

– Analog Cinema projection on 35mm & 70mm changeover equipment

– Digital Cinema projection on xenon (and preferably laser equipment)

– Ability to handle and project from a wide array of digital formats (DCP, Blu-ray, ProRes, PowerPoint presentations etc.) as well as occasionally HDCam, DigiBeta etc..

– Theater management systems

– General proficiency with computers and electronics

Desired Experience:

– Nitrate projection (the Egyptian is equipped to show 35mm nitrate prints)

– Laser projection (Barco 30L)
