This hasn't much to do with our job in the booth, but anyhow:
Sleeping Beauty (Disney 1959, Technirama-70) just arrived in Denmark today on DVD, region2, in 4:3 pan and scan. Were american enthusiasts let down the same way...? -To really make it bad, bonus material among others give us Walt Disney himself, showing a 35 and a 70mm film clip, telling about the difference...
Collectors Classic item or what...?

Buena Vista has not deemed Americans worthy by releasing it yet on DVD. However, as far as Disney and Buena Vista, they have finally got it right and now release all of their titles 16x9 enhanced for widescreen tv's. They have also started re-releasing some of their catalog titles as well recently with 16x9 enhanced. When Sleeping Beauty does make it to the U.S., it will most probably be 16x9 and maybe a double disc Special Edition to boot. We will see...

It hasn't been released on Region 1 DVD yet. Hopefully, it will get the usual Disney feature animation treatment (i.e. remastered anamorphic widescreen) when it does. Sleeping Beauty recently had a 70mm screening at the El Capitan in Hollywood. These days such special screenings are usually done in conjunction with a video/DVD release. We'll see!

The LD was in letterbox a couple of years ago. Interestingly, the 70mm Technirama prints had very wide frame lines when it was released in Denmark, December 26, 1958 (see list)

While I am thinking about it, wasn't Sleeping Beauty originally 2.35 theatrically? I have seen it before on a letterboxed VHS tape some years back and remembered it appeared 2.35. Does anybody know if this is true or not? I am hoping John P. may have a link for to go to with this info... ;'>

Never mind...I found the info on IMDB.com. It was 2.35 for 35mm and 2.20 for 70mm.

Not tooting my own horn, but...

The singing voice of "Aurora" (sleeping beauty) is my cousin Mary Costa who now lives in the Knoxville, TN area.

After this film, she went on to have a successful singing career with the Metropolitan Opera in NYC.

She also made a few other films... I've managed to find one of them for my collection. I look forward to the day I get to show it to her.

Wow! That's something! Now if only you played the prince!

---and there's a nice short with (among others) Bruce's nice cousin on the DVD !

-But the 2,20:1 - as Thomas mentions - is definitely not correct for the 70mm print, we saw in Denmark.

I screened it as late as vinter 1980/81 for a local Disney boss:
Original 1959-print - hardly used - Mint condition - pic as well as sound. Some weeks later the print was junked, because the reissue was to run in a 35mm only - house....,and the 70mm print took up so much space in storage ! Once again, Ladies and Gents !

Horray
