I just finished watching the original version of "the vanishing", a french film. It far surpasses the US version with Kiefer Sutherland, Jeff Bridges, Sandra Bullock, and Nancy Travis.In the US version, Nancy Travis saves Keifer. They also have Keifer portrayed as a depressive and demented lunatic gone insane trying to find his lost woman.
WARNING... SPOILERS COMING UP..
You have been warned...
In the original, the key character, is more grounded, but still obsessed. The end where he is in the coffin, much more dramatic, and frightening. In this one he does not get out. I actually felt like I was as trapped as he was.
I sincerely suggest this film, even though I just gave the ending. It is very moving and powerful. Totally amazing.

Did you just watch it on the Independent Film Channel? Just wondering from the time of your post. I only saw the beginning, after staying up late and staying home doing some graphic arts stuff.

I don`t want to split hairs here, but the original version of "The Vanishing" is a Dutch film! The point is, it makes it even more an achievement because the Dutch film industry is very small.
There are a number of US remakes of European films. Why don`t they just show the original versions? Another example is the original version of "Point of No Return/The Assassin" which is a lukewarm remake of the fantastic French film "Nikita" directed by Luc Besson (with Jean Reno as "The Cleaner"!).

No please, split hairs. I knew I got that wrong when I said it was a french film. It was nakita that was the french film, a far superior film to the not bad us version.It is important to clear up misstated facts. It is very good to see that there is a Dutch film industry, of any level. This film is far superior to the horribly boring US version.
