My DVD player (Harmon/Kardon DVD 25) is hooked up to my computer as I do not have a TV, but a great 22" monitor from LaCie. It goes into the S-Video input of my graphics card (GeForce4 128MB). I can watch DVDs on the monitor if I open PowerVCR II.
However, some DVDs have a fat white bar displayed across almost the whole image. Is that some kind of copy protection? Oddly, the white bar only appears after 2-3 seconds, but then it doesn`t go away.
Some DVDs work without any problems.

Macrovision. This can easily and legally be defeated, but you do have to pay a for a bit of hardware to be hooked up to the video signal between your DVD player and the input on your graphics card. It shouldn't be too expensive. I've never purchased one so I don't know what to recommend.

Isn´t macrovision supposed to tear up the picture and mess up the colors rather than just putting a white bar across the screen?

Macrovision is pretty goofy. Your card just might handle it differently. Maybe ask the card's manufacturer.

It'd probably be cheaper to just spend the $75 on a DVD drive for your computer.

What software player do you recommend that will ignore Macrovision, and facilitate high-quality captures of still images from a DVD?

I have a DVD drive in the computer. But then I can`t use the remote control!
I just bought a cordless mouse. I am too tired tonight to unpack and install it. But tomorrow I will see if it also works on the carpet when I am lying on the floor.
