There was considerable discussion about this movie when it was still playing in theatres with favorably comments by everyone except one. Keeping up with my new policy of being very selective what I see in theatres, I decided to wait for the video release of "HOLES". It was released yesterday and after watching the DVD last night, I am very happy to side with the majority. The beginning was very slow and the flashbacks at first was very confusing but it all comes together at the end. The picture quality was excellent and the sound mix was fantastic with very active discreet sound from all speakers including the rear. Although "HOLES" is based on a book for young people, I agree with some who said the story might be difficult to follow for younger children because I was also becoming edgy at the beginning. It was a good thing I hung in there because "HOLES" turned to be an excellent film. At the end, I found the use of flashbacks pertaining to the family curse and why Kate a beautiful young school teacher became the outlaw "Kissin Kate Barlow very good. It also explained the reason why all the young inmates at a boy's correctional institution were made to dig five foot in diameter by five foot deep holes out in the wilderness near the camp.
