If i'm projecting a dvd with 1.66:1 in the screening room I built, how should I mask it? Obviousely in theatres it was flat (1.85:1). So I'm wondering weather they added more picture information to the top of the image, or chopped from the side to make it 1.66:1. I'm hoping they have more visable area from the top and bottom that could get cut to match 1.85:1.

My screen unmasked is about 5 x 13, so going wider (1.85:1) will offer me more usable screen space.

If I recall correctly, I think everything Disney shoots is at 1.66, but they make sure that no important information is at the top and bottom such that if the top and bottom have a sliver taken off of them to be projected at 1.85, nothing would appear to be wrong with the composition or lost.

From conversations I've had with Disney's studio projection guys, Disney uses 1.75 for their animated features. That's what we ran with for the couple of ShoWest screenings I've done with them. Not sure what ratio they use for their live-action stuff. In any case you won't lose very much (certainly nothing important) by projecting Disney animation at 1.85, the way vitually every theater in the US shows them. As Brad noted, Disney protects for 1.85.

Disney has used every concievable ratio known and unknown to man. I have seen 1.33/1.66/1.75/1.85/2.20/2.35/2.40 and am just waiting earnestly for them to start doing the screens the other way around with 1 to 2.35 etcetera.
