My subwoofer seems to turn itself on and off when I am not running in dolby. I assume that it is some sort of energy saver, but it is very annoying. Does anyone have any ideas on how to combat it?

I have a pioneer VSX-508

That would be the fault of the subwoofer itself, not the receiver. So the Pioneer VSX is out of the equation. Some powered subwoofers only turn on when signal is being sent, and then shut off after being idle for a bit. That's just bad design. On most of them, though, should be a way to make it so that it stays on 100% of the time. I have personally never powered my subwoofer down in the nearly 6 years I've owned it and have seen no negative effect whatsoever. Check around the back of the sub and see of there are any switches you can flip.

No switches, there is a rotary knob for the power output that I usually keep at about 75%.

The only workaraound I can see is just to turn it off when it is not in discrete playback (I assume that's what you meant by Dolby).

I have a Sony SA-VE445H connected up to a Sony STR-DE595 and I haven't had any such problem like that. My subwoofer is on standby mode all the time and the receiver on ProLogic unless it can grab something better (DD 5.1 via TosLink). Even if I turn on/off the receiver, no feedback from the subwoofer.

However, my Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 system does give off feedback but only when first turned on. It's connected to a Klipsch ProMedia DD-5.1 pre/dec that converts Dolby Surround from my computer and Xbox to the speakers.
