The R1 special edition was released November 9, 1999 according to Amazon.com.

Did you mean the theaterical release date?

Sorry but that title sounds like a porno spoof of Flash Gordon haha.........along the lines of Forrest Hump.

Actually it is, Dino. But unlike most pornos, it has a story line and some really funny bits. It is a great parody on the Flash Gordon series.

The DVD and most all 35mm prints have had all the X-rated "good parts" cut out for an "R" rating.

Edit: The DVD is the X-rated version.

The light porno version is spelled "FLESH GORDON" and the 1980 Universal version starring Sam Jones is spelled "FLASH GORDON". Please also keep in mind the original series of "FLASH GORDON" made in the early thirties starring Buster Crabbe. Of all the versions, my favorite are the Crabbe series. I though the producers of the porno version did a very good job creating the campy look of the original series. Beside the original R or X rated version of "FLESH GORDON", there is a "FLESH GORDON-2" now out on DVD but it is not very good.

Flesh Gordon has a special place in my heart, it was the very last film I ran as a full time projectionist before moving to NYC and entering the TV business (although I did many turns in the booth down here, p/t). This was in spring 1982, at the Dewitt Drive-In on Erie Blvd. in Dewitt, NY. It was on a double bill with Galaxina, starring the beautiful and tragic Dorothy Stratton. Hell of a way to end a 13 year career, with two cranky Brenkarts, a popcorn bucket full of carbon ends and a soft-core double bill.

The best part of the film is the last reel, with Flesh and Dr. Jerkoff trying to save Dale Ardor from the Great God Porno (you're reading this right folks, I swear it). The voice of Porno was Craig T. Nelson, who starred in the Poltergeist movies and later Call To Glory.

OK, I couldn’t resist: I just *HAD* to watch it last night for this year’s viewing credit.

The DVD is the uncut X-rated version with 15 minutes of added footage not in the 35mm prints. It even has the Intermission sequence and music. Definitely a TAP film! (Tits, A$$, P*$$y) This is pure cheese! I’m still cracking up! Some mammarable quotes:

"I got most of the parts from the Sears catalog." Dr. Jerkoff
"Some species of penisaurus I should think." Dr. Jerkoff
"But, your assholiness, they’re forest people..." Warrior
"Good Lord Flesh, they’re dykes!" Dr. Jerkoff
"I got the power pasties and I know how to use them." Dr. Jerkoff

..and many more...

I love this movie. The music by Ralph Ferraro is simply fantastic! I can't tell you how many times I ran this picture in drive-ins during the 70s. Even though the live-action was shot on 16mm, the composites with effects shots in 35mm look great.

I've never seen the original version, but I'm sure glad to know it's on DVD. Are there any extras on the disc?

The "oxygen on this planet" line is my favorite. My second favorite (from memory, so excuse me if I don't get it exactly right): You think I don't know you've come here to steal the secret plans to my new, hydro-combustion, miracle-patented, micro-teflon, nuclear-gammo-rocketship-plane-missle?! Which was 20 years in the making and employs a new updraft design, which lifts the ship on small spirals of synthetic strontium pellets. Well, I've never even heard of it, so you're barking up the wrong tree!

Phil, there's an intermission? What happens with that?
