This month, TCM is running one of their "historical shorts" regarding Hollywood Musicals. This particular one is hosted by by Jason Alenander of "Seinfeld" and Director/Choreographer Susan Stroman.

Anyhow, Stroman comments about Gene Kelly's athletic ability, and gives him full credit for the streetcar sequence in "Singing In The Rain", where he jumps onto and off of the streetcar, landing in Debbie Reynolds' automobile.

Early last week, I happened to catch two documentaries on TCM titled "Thats Dancing", circa 1985, and "Hollywood Dream".

Anyhow, this "Singing In The Rain" sequence was specifically addressed in one of these documentaries; I forgot which one. Fact is that a stunt double was used for much of the sequence, and several takes were required. One piece of footage shows the stunt double missing Debbie Reynolds' car entirely, landing in a sitting position smack on the pavement! Luckily he was not injured. The documentary also mentioned the stunt double's name.

I did attempt to find some reference to this sequence on the internet, but have had no luck.
