I hope it has lots of crazy and zany outtakes! Who doesn't like watching that crap? I don't care about the movie, show me the actors flubbing their lines! That's where it's all at yo.

Zany? ZANY! I've not heard that word in years! You're cracking me up, Joe. WTF do you come up with all this stuff?

Oh, how I love outtakes!!! They are soooooo funny and entertaining. I hadn't thought of it before but they can turn this whole attendance decline around by showing outtakes instead of the movie! [/sarcasm]

I think I've watched DVD outtakes one time a while ago because I was very bored. It's the same as watching those stupid blooper shows. One actor messes up the line and then all the actors crack up. Man, that's funny!

You guys are cracking me up, LOL……

Leonard Nimoy’ once wrote a book called “I am not Spock…”

“I am not Andy Summers…”

Tied to the tracks and the train's fast coming
Strapped to the wing with the engine running
You say that this wasn't in your plan
Don't mess around with the demolition man

Tied to a chair, and the bomb is ticking
This situation was not of your picking
You say that this wasn't in your plan
Don't mess around with the demolition man

I'm a walking nightmare, an arsenal of doom
I kill conversation as I walk into the room
I'm a three line whip, I'm the sort of thing they ban
I'm a walking disaster, I'm a demolition man

Tied to a chair, and the bomb is ticking
This situation was not of your picking
You say that this wasn't in your plan
Don't mess around with the demolition man

You come to me like a moth to the flame
It's love you need but I don't play that game
'Cause you could be my greatest fan
But I'm nobody's friend, I'm a demolition man

Pete’

You sound like you what some of the good stuff, well I’ll be honest I don’t drink, just give some Robinsons summer fruits and I’m there….

Well I’ve just pooped in to see what’s going down on “STAR WARS EPISODE 3” as I’m at present doing an assignment for college, you know where you are asked to produce something with 3000 to 5000 words etc, etc, along with images facts as well….

All this information can be based on

1# Primary research - where you generate the information
VS
2# Secondary research –someone else as published the information

The list is ongoing, anyway, so I’m just taking a break at the moment and time for dinner to, as I’m close to swing from the chandler, hehehe LOL, the project assignment is called “The Art of Visual Effects” from past to present going though all the aspects of the journey, WOW that was cool, I like those words, I’ll think I’ll incorporate some of them into it….

So its getting closer now, I feel a disturbance in the Force, October 31st 2005 is only 37 days away, and with college, time fly’s by like there no tomorrow, but there is and it helps, it helps because you’re focused on what you are doing.

You know I’ve read that “TITANIC” as been postponed to a later date in October, well that’s just typical and it will be no surprise if “STAR WARS EPISODE 3” was pushed forward, due to what I believe in is clashing with another realise within the same week or time frame…..

I’ll be waiting for both, anyway you’ll have to excuse me the pasta is done and, I’ll continue this in a short while….WOW that wasn’t long though some of wished it was, so I think that’s it for today after doing some 6 typing and research as well, I’ll continue tomorrow…

And I think I’ll take a break and pop on over to see a friend, so Bon voyage…

I'm a walking nightmare, an arsenal of doom
I kill conversation as I walk into the room
I'm a three line whip, I'm the sort of thing they ban

Do have to give Sting points for making some DTS CD versions of his albums, as well as the Police Greatist Hits CD. What this has to do with Star Wars Episode III I certainly don't know. But it seems more interesting to discuss!

How my poor heart aches with every step you take.

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake

Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace.
I dream at night, I can only see your face.
I look around but it's you I can't replace.
I keep crying baby, baby please..................

Every move you make
Every vow you break

That is, by far, my least favorite Police song of all time. I hate it. It has no melodical qualities. The singing is horrific. One of the worst songs of all time. Anyone who likes the song deserves to get Hepatitus B and die.

Every Breath You Take is the most overrated Police song. It certainly didn't deserve to be the #1 song. That was back when the charts still sort of mattered too- I don't even know what the #1 song is right now.

Hallo nice to see, to see you nice…

Don’t pay any attention to this madness, no more lyrics from me this week, well maybe next week…

I think the joke on me. Anyway tonight saw a live puppet performance, at the college fascinating and one of the techniques that I liked was blacking out the stage, while the puppeteers give the puppets a more live feeling.

When I saw this I remember hearing about the (BUNRAKU puppet theatre) in Japan, where they blackout the stage, with careful lighting, lighting just the puppets was fun. [thumbsup]

Very interesting more so than film, with film its simply just there, to take audiences to places that are too fantastic or too dangerous, and so my friends only 34 days now to “STAR WARS EPISODE 3” getting exciting now.

Sonic Whole Overhead Sound now installed and ready for “Star Wars episode 3” at the present moment I’m testing her out, and she works lovely, this totally immerses you in a cocoon of sound, this may not be the final leap in Dolby Digital surround-EX, but it sure makes the movie experience more fun at home than most cinemas.

“Mission to Mars” “We Where Soldiers” all work out just fine, as do a few others with split-surrounds, anyway 20 days to go now, I like round numbers…

Well I guess that makes my home THX cinema 8.1 now, with a few extra left centre and right centre channels to be installed in the near future….WOW. [Wink]

Mike'

No I’m not a true Star Wars fan, what I mean by that is I don’t dress up in costumes and hang around cinemas day in and day out like all the rest, I simple like the films as a science fiction film media, nothing more and nothing less, as for the sound design and mixing techniques on all six films, yes I like raving about that, same goes with “Glory.” [Smile]

Just curious, Andy. Has the DVD been specifically encoded for this? If not, then are you truly playing back this feature in the manner that George Lucas wants you to? And are you using only a THX-certified component/speaker for the overhead (matrixed channel from the L-R "EX") channels? If not, than that would kinda render your THX system rather non-certifiable (unlike a certain someone we know [Wink] .

That is stupid. Your home theater is stupid. I can't believe people count MATRIXED channels as part of the whole 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 etc thing. You do not have 8 true discrete channels. The most you can hope for at home is 6.1. The most you can hope for at the theater is 5.1 from Dolby Digital and DTS and 8.0 (6.0 for most movies) from SDDS.

Home theater terminology makes me sick. Y'all a bunch o' amateurs!

Posted by Brad Miller (Member # 2) on 10-10-2005, 08:22 PM:

What's even more sick are the people that think they have a THX system at home, but fail to realize that home THX setups do not come anywhere near requirements of REAL THEATER THX auditoriums!

Posted by Joe Redifer (Member # 3) on 10-10-2005, 10:21 PM:

I've been to peoples' "THX" home theaters where I can hear their furnace in the backround or people walking around upstairs. THX my ass! I highly doubt that very many rooms in peoples' homes are quiet enough to meet thats spec. But they have equipment with the THX logo on it so that's all they need. Nevermind that their center channel is not the same make and model as their left and rights. Nevermind that they take all of the low frequencies from EVERY SPEAKER and route it to the subwoofer instead of letting the thing be discrete. Andy, once again you have given me diarrhea with corn chunks.

Also, if I have the apostrophes in the wrong place anywhere in my post here, please let me know.

If there's corn chunks it, how can it still be diarrhea? I thought diarrhea was all liquid.

Either way, with how that BM was described I strongly recommend a thorough shower with lots of soap and scrubbing. Paper alone won't wipe away a mess like that.

I'd like to record some diarrhea sounds with a THX-certified microphone and then charge people $1,748.86 per month to have the audio download into their THX-certified cellphones as cute ringers. Run the flatulence through a harmonizer and turn the toots into tunes! It would give the THX "Deep Note" a whole new meaning!

Your disgusting man well let me see, around 1994 I saw “Maverick” at the newly refitted Warner West End now called “VUE” the “THX” sound system in that auditorium was just way too bright sounding not much low end, and worse it failed to impress me. Unlike the “Empire” and “High Wycombe 6” the Warner also had sound system problems that day with what sounded like the audio leads been disconnected thus creating loud buzz and humming and thumping sound, “the audience was laughing….”

Well we all know that the “THX 3417” cross-over is nothing more than a high tech electronic cross-over network system, I also heard that some “THX” cinemas lost there licence due to noisy “AC” is one of them, and the rest is just cinema politics.

Now as to the question of home “THX” that some issue you have brought up lots of people disagree with home “THX” and those us that agree with the technical standards understand, mate I’ve worked for two cinemas hear in the UK in the past, something I wouldn’t mind doing again if one would arise.

Now Joe’ what you think about the use of adding matrix decoders on to Dolby Digital for extracting an extra channel or as I would plainly put it, tacking away this the disorientation, where in the past and I noticed slight confession between the split-surrounds, this is where the modification of the Dolby CP-45, correct me if that is wrong, helps making the spilt-surrounds more open, wider etc, etc.

Anyway I got to get back to my class mow, bye, bye…….19 days to go LOL

Maybe because Dolby considers matrixed channels as true channels.

From the Dolby website :

Dolby Digital Surround EX brings even more realistic surround effects, with added dimension and depth. It adds a third surround channel the Dolby Digital format (making it, in effect, 6.1), reproduced through speakers on the rear walls of the cinema."

Paul’

Yeah if you think about it, the signals within the Dolby SA-10

http://www.kinoteam.de/kt/image/big/dol_sa10_innen.jpg

must have a few more things up it sleeve, and I’m a believer and know that I will be getting a signal from the height surrounds, or “Sonic Whole Overhead Sound” and if using Dolby matrix decoding processors to extract extra information that sounds different, then I see no wrong in it, if it’s an ancient technology and it works, then why not use it...

I was running center back surround in my home cinema, nearly 1 year before I read about it for cinema application, as well as specking to a Dolby technician based at the New York office about the idea of using a Dolby pro-logic decoder with my Millennium dts 2.4.6 decoder, the technician understood what I was saying by making it more exciting and drawing the audience into the film just a little bit more.

But my original idea consisted of five surround loudspeakers for the back, and multi layout of the side array, and the height surround was there to use back around 1998, though I never gave it any thought, but now I’m looking to find ways to add on or improve the film, like “cross over height surround” this is another idea that I have worked out, when I was watching Goldeneye dts 5.1 SS THX Laserdisc, side 1 chapter 24, I thought wait a second I’ve got a plan, and after drawing a few diagrams came up with what I call “cross over height surround” which is completely different to “Sonic Whole Overhead Sound.”

So why am I playing with "Sonic Whole Overhead Sound” and not “cross over height surround” simple fact is I don’t have enough Dolby matrix decoders to do this at the present moment, I need matching decoders and a few more stereo amplifiers EQ’s to make this doable.

Well all I have to do is keep checking the second hand shops for some matching AVR, as some home cinema users get rid of them at the silliest prices, bring it on, if I can make it work for say around £200.00 0r less not bad at all…..I will be patient.

Getting close now 19 days.... [beer] [thumbsup]

Keep in mind the key word here is "decoding," which means to pull out something that was encoded in the first place. Anything else is not part of the intended mix.

If it's not discrete, then the number value should not be increased (5.1 to 6.1, etc). They should just say "matrixed to emulate a 6.1 sound" or some shit like that. You are still relying on the bandwidth of two channels to create three or more. Dolby can lick my diarrhea-laden ass if it thinks otherwise.

Dolby Labs mandates the use of "5.1" in terminology to describe Dolby EX soundtracks on DVDs. It is against their advertising guidelines to use 6.1. Dolby EX is not a discrete 6.1 system and thus should not be described as that.

The situation is different regarding Dolby Digital Plus (for use on HD-DVD and Blu Ray Discs). Dolby Digital Plus supports higher bitrates than the 640kb/s maximum of Dolby Digital. It can go as high as 6 megabits per second. Dolby Digital Plus can support the 8 discrete audio channel maximums of HD-DVD and BD and extend farther than that for other formats in the future.

Of course, a Dolby Digital Plus decoder will be yet another thing to put on the checklist of items needed in a new audio-video receiver. Lots of HDMI connections would be at the top of the list.

Bobby’

You’re all clued up on this and one the ball as usual, now I can’t speak about what Joe’ said but I think he should consult a Doctor before he overflows the sewers and “Denver” is flooded and overwhelmed with diarrhea. http://www.bangkokhealth.com/cimages/diarrhea02.jpg

Now this is getting some attention, it’s all about spectacular or adding more parts of the room with extra sound, anyway call it what you will, other than this new “Dolby” format, “Dolby Digital Plus” holding up to 8 channels wow, now will this have the left centre and right centre channels or do they have different plans for this.

Anyway Bobby’ do you think you can post a direct glossary link explaining more on “Dolby Digital Plus” sounds good.

Maybe we can have some of the old Todd-Ao films as they where meant to be heard five-screen and split-surrounds, D’oh! Sorry mono surrounds as split-surrounds didn’t come around till mid 1970’s “Superman the movie”, will if they what to remix the film and not give us the original road show event, so be it.

Frank’ sorry you have been left in total confusion, on these issues I trust that you will make heads and tails of all this madness.

One more thing Bobby’ will dts be on the HD-DVD band wagon, with a newer version of dts-ES or will it remain unchanged only with a higher bit rate, oh and why isn’t Dolby implementing this new format into the professional field the cinema, and once again “making films sound better….” [Smile]

The Dolby website says "in effect, 6.1".

If you disagree, go find a Dolby EX DVD that says "6.1".

There should be no surprise to find Cinemas that are "THX certified" to actually be sub-standard in their presentation. I feel that THX never really meant anything on most parts because it's up to management to ensure that it's "THX" 365 days year. Not just when the THX guy is around the corner.

Here in Melbourne THX cinemas are all over the place. Sometimes good then other times bad. And being THX don't bring them more patrons either.

_______________

Andy with our preview cinema setup of a DOLBY CP55, QSC power amps and aaron loudspeakers will knock your digital THX, JBL, SPL down any day. [Big Grin] And yes that's without stereo surround!

One thing i don't like about Home Theatre is that apart from the music the rest of the mix sounds fake ie: the sound effects actually sound like sound effects etc rather than being realistic as they are with decent Cinema set up.

Keep in mind the trailers for the re-issues of
Star Wars 4,5 & 6 had that little [dlp] in the background with voiceover saying " "if this is the way you see Star Wars, you haven't seen them at all..." or something like that.

I just don't understand why they are not available for theatrical distribution.

I suppose instead we just go over to Andy's place and have the experience of our lives [Roll Eyes]

Let me get this straight, are you saying your setup playing a plain stereo or mono track will sound better than another nice system playing the same material in 5.1 digital? If that's the case, I don't buy it. The quality of source material being played is a primary determining factor on whether the sound quality is good or not.

Basically, someone would have to have a horribly set up system (either commercial or in the home) to have 5.1 sound worse than an optical stereo or mono track.

1. The verbiage on Dolby's website is written by more than one person -likely many people. Lots more room for error.

2. Whoever put up the 6.1 and 7.1 phoney baloney bullcrap probably only did it to make some geeks in one tech-head camp happy -probably so they would stop e-mailing Dolby to tell them "it's really 6.1!"

The argument of it being okay to describe DD-EX as 6.1, 7.1, etc. makes about as much sense as a car stereo fanatic claiming his automobile has 20 channels of sound based solely on his number of amps and speakers. If you're playing a normal red book CD on the thing, you're only playing back 2 discrete channels. Not any more than that.

Not a good example. Because Dolby EX is being called 6.1 from the viewpoint of an added encoded channel, not because of the fact it uses an additional amps and speakers.
Dolby has consistently referred to their Dolby Stereo optical format as providing 4 channels of sound, yet that only has two tracks.

I'm curious to see the source cited about Dolby's policy regarding EX not being called 6.1. It's still odd they would still be violating that on their own website after all this time.

Bobby,
I have compared our sound and picture to top end cinemas and home set ups. In my opinion we are just as good and some cases better. Of course there are certain venues here where the sound is superior to ours.
If i had the budget i'd go digital too but being non commercial, and non profit doesn't allow for it.
We always get compliments on our sound whether playing back 35, 16 or video.
One evening I had a cast and crew screening for a short which was to screen in 35mm but somehow the optical sound was printed out of sync to the picture (long story) so that was replaced with Digital Betacam. The guy who did the sound mix at the top end Sound Firm post house was concerned that the sound would be inferior off the digi beta compared to the optical track.
He was quite impressed and mention after the screening " I didn't know it would sound that good".

With our system I like what I hear, i'm not saying that it's the best but for our needs and budget it's damn good. [Cool]

Also, it is important to note that consumers have come to expect the term “5.1” to refer to 5.1 discrete channels of audio (five full-range channels plus a low frequency effects, or LFE, channel). Dolby Digital Surround EX carries 5.1 discrete audio channels with a matrix-encoded Back Surround channel. It is therefore not a true 6.1-channel system, and the term “6.1” should not be used to describe it. Some new formats carry more than 5.1 channels of audio, including 6.1 discrete channels, and it is therefore important to prevent consumer confusion by distinguishing between the 5.1-channel Dolby Digital Surround EX format and true 6.1-channel formats.
I think that pretty well settles the "EX is 5.1 or 6.1" argument.

Hallo there I’ll get to the point, now I’ve just looked into the Dolby web site for information on “Dolby Digital Plus” which you stated it can support up to 8 channels 7.1, now I can’t find a speaker diagram layout for this, it has to be on the site somewhere? So I’m just going to take a guess will it have five-screen channel and the usual split-surround configuration with Dolby surround-EX including .1 sub bass LFE, sounds like the SDDS 8 format, or will it be left centre right split-surrounds discrete centre back surround and discrete height surround or “Sonic Whole Overhead Sound” with the .1 sub bass LFE, which configuration will it be?

Do you have those facts…?

Paul’

The whole point to Dolby surround-EX is to eliminate the disorientation between the stereo surrounds with phantom imaging which can be disorientation, I’ve noticed this effect so many times, I and with Dolby surround-EX it juts makes it more easier to pin point sounds and make the flybys with airplane spaceships etc, and giving the mixers for flexibility and creativity, it’s like this, Dolby pro-logic will work with any stereo format depending on ho it’s mixed which is what I have noticed.

Now there are some films that some people say sound better in Dolby pro-logic, like the surround effects, bearing in mind the crosstalk errors there will be some parts of the music that was mixed for the front, well it’s going to find it’s way leaking into the surrounds overlapping or masking a particular part of the music like a violin, and a trumpet from the fronts is masking the violin on the surrounds due to phasing of the signal, well, will use that for argument sake shall we.

“A View to A Kill” on DVD the opening titles by “Duran, Duran” is only played back over the left and right fronts there is nothing carried on the centre channel and no music on the split-surrounds as well, but in Dolby pro-logic someone will say it sound better in Dolby pro-logic, you see what I mean by that.

However by placing a Dolby pro-logic in of the front left and right and placing amplification EQ and extra loudspeakers, like upper center which is taking the signal from the phantom left and right, and with the press of the button activating the Dolby pro-logic will give a more precise location of the sounds placement, thus sending it to the center which I have placed above the stranded centre channel output.

Now with using Dolby pro-logic and placing more loudspeakers for the surrounds including amplification EQ, or I can use a stereo mixer and by using the line inputs of a basic 6 channel model lines 1 and 2 for side surrounds and sending the pan pots to left and right, line 3 the signal from the surround matrix output from the Dolby pro-logic and keeping the pan pot centred thus the signal will be going to left and right, and adjusting the levels with wideband pink noise to get it all finalized the center back surround will output in the normal way…

And I thought I wrote long sentences!

The speaker layout for 8 channel audio on either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray formats has not been settled -at least I haven't read anything official anywhere that settles the point. At this point the only thing anyone can do is make suggestions for what they would prefer.

I personally don't think a five-screen channel layout is necessary unless you have a really gigantic screen at home. I think the 7.1 layout would be far more effective by using three channels for the stage, two side wall surround channels and two rear wall surround channels.

Another alternative for 8-channel audio is a 6.2 layout, using stereo subwoofer channels. It might be good for accurately recreating the stereo subwoofer mixes from 70mm format 42 releases.

There's a very strong chance most HD-DVD and BD-DVD movies will only be in 5.1, but perhaps at higher bitrates. You'll see some discrete 6.1 stuff in both Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-ES. Dolby Labs simply engineered more foward-looking capabilities into DD-Plus so it could adapt more easily to future audio trends.

Of course the main thing to drive audio trends in movies is the movies themselves. New DTS XD-10 cinema players have the upward capability to play 10 or more channels of sound. But they're just going to be stuck playing back 5.1 as long as filmmakers and film producers maintain the status quo.

Paul, The whole point to Dolby surround-EX is to eliminate---(snip)
I'm pretty sure Paul (as well as most others reading this thread) already know those points.

Correct me if I’m wrong hear, wasn’t Dolby format 42 the baby boom sub bass track mono?

With the release of Superman the movie and the replacement of the 2 remaining tracks well 1 replaced so that they can mix films with what they called split-surrounds, thus leaving one sub bass track playing, as the baby boom was simply playing the same signal and that would present as waste….

One other thing I’ve only worked with Dolby A type SR and Dolby digital playback formats when I was last working as a projectionist, so I may be a little rusty but I still know how to lace up, so the audio format 42 that wasn’t for the baby boom no?

As for the layout for “Dolby Digital Plus” I think we should have five-screen discrete with left and right side surrounds centre back matrix “Sonic Whole Overhead Sound” matrix and .1 sub bass, now that’s more wow and refreshing….

Now if the two back surrounds are discrete or stereo then Dolby or some re-recording mix is going to play around with those tracks, or some one like myself LOL….

Woo, hold on there, dts X-D 10, now that will have five-screen discrete with side surrounds left and right, centre back surround discrete, height surround discrete and the .1 sub bass discrete.

Now if that’s the case I like to hear it, but where does the first rain drop, drop?

3-D, thinking in sound, I wonder if there’s a limit to what dts can do?

There maybe cinemas with true 1-D above and below?

I’ve done a diagram for this; it’s around somewhere, oh yes it’s still in my head, a bit damn complex to talk about, 15.1? Now if anyone can make that happen Dolby would be on the case…

Like THX said motion picture theatres loudspeakers have not changed in 35 years when advertising there THX sound system program back in 1983…

So with all these wonderful Digital formats we have Dolby digital dts and SDDS.

There are limitless means to where digital sound technology, can go so where else is there to go…

You're confusing details of Format 42 with Format 43.

70mm Format 42 has three stage channels, two subwoofer channels and one mono surround channel. It is essentially a 4.2 format.

70mm Format 43 prints held the typical 5.1 channel layout, but were backward compatible with Format 42 setups. The surrounds held the subwoofer audio for Format 42 playback. The subwoofer channel held the mono surround audio for Format 42 playback. A crossover simply filtered out the audio bands that weren't needed.

Huh? Wow and refreshing?

After visiting a number of AMC movie theater sites, I have decided I don't like surround audio over my head. Of course the typical AMC movie theater just has speakers in front of you and the surround array stuffed up into the ceiling. Absolute suckage. Any theater doing that gets an instant grade F in my book. I don't care how great the projection looks or how fancy the auditorium was decorated. Grade F period.

So it was Dolby format 43, know idea which films on DVD I’m talking about the classic the “Dolby” Stereo 70mm films like “Starman” which format was that, or better still do you have a list comprising all the “Dolby” format 42 and 43 though 42 would have been remixed, that sucks, I think the planning of “Dolby Digital” for the home cinema hasn’t been thought out very well by “Dolby”, tell now with there “Dolby Digital Plus”

What does AMC stand for, “Amateur Movie Cinemas” I thought other projectionists liked other projectionists, well I guess I was wrong, tell you the truth I don’t like ODEON they say there “fanatical about film” now if AMC gets a grade f in your books, the ODEON gets a grade “X” in book for the rest of all time….

Anyway I’m going to fire up the THX sound and watch the last 1hr 20mins of “Kingdom of Heaven” with “Sonic Whole Overhead Sound” LOL….JBL kicks ass…Back in a jiffy…. [beer] 16 days only 16 days left now….

Although Format 43 pioneered the 5.1 split-surround model, I don't consider it to be the "classic Dolby" format. Format 42 was used on the vast majority of 70mm Dolby mag releases. I consider Format 42 to be the "classic Dolby" sound format because it was used on Star Wars' 70mm release prints. And that's the movie that made Dolby famous. Even though Format 43 debuted at the end of 1978 it didn't get much of any regular use on 70mm prints until the end of the 1980s and early 1990s.

quote:

I don't agree with that. Certainly not in terms of the channel layout. New sound formats need to be designed more for the future rather than be rooted soley in the past. The 5.1 format's trade of a second subwoofer channel in return for stereo surrounds is a good compromise. Many argue subwoofer audio is not directional and that only one sub channel is needed.

That’s very true “Star Wars” was made famous on its bases and use of sound, for many years was one of controversy and still is I think to this day.

Subwoofer directional, depending on where you’re sat in the cinema, or the home cinema, the crossover point setting also is critical the higher the setting your eras will detect it and therefore localization of it will be located the setting on my JBL 4645 “THX” modified is set to 80Hz hears a link to my small but “Just Bloody Loud” home THX cinema http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/3/158039.html

The images are around 2 months old, and since that time the positioning of the three-screen is different…

Not the JBL sub bass placed to the corner, as I don’t dare place the multi standard SONY monitor on top of the sub as it may pull on the electro guns, though I have had a Panasonic on top of it with no pulling on the colour at all, just lucky, but it may pull on the SONY, but the problem will be sound, the sound playing are with psychoacoustics.

All the three-screen channels are at the same height at the moment, and placed a little bit wider with a toe-in angle, also this is still in the workings, when I get the time and money to build a sound stage extending the fall width of the front, along with a vertical wall a THX baffle.

Also note the JBL placed on top of the JBL control 5 this gives me upper centre sounds when playing most films, and at the press of the button on the Yamaha DSR-70Pro, works fantastic on “Apollo 13” dts THX laserdisc chapter 11 trough to chapter 16, well the whole damn film…

You will see the black box that I’m using for the stereo surrounds decoding the pioneer VSP-200 and that “Sonic Whole Overhead Sound” LOL. [Smile]

Attention: Andy Summers!

This just in! DON'T go out and buy "Revenge of the Sith" on November 1st, because Lucas is going to pull a "Lord of the Rings" and bring out an expanded "Special Jedi Knight Edition" on January 17th.

It will include another 45 minutes of footage, including the following scenes:

Miles Solo teaching his son, Han, how to pilot a spaceship.

Annakin and Amidala boogeying at a space disco to the tunes of Guum Wanglow and the Inter-Galactic Jug Band.

Jar Jar Binks getting blown away when he discovers Palpatine's secret identity before anyone else.

Yoda visiting his secret girlfriend, who just happens to be Mace Windu's sister, Melonda.

And, C-3PO and R2-D2 declaring their homo-robotic love for each other.

The soundtrack will be completely re-mixed in Tom Holman's 10.2 channel system, which has been adapted to be 5.1 compatible via matrixing. This Christmas, stores will begin selling the new processors which will decode these soundtracks. BUT ONLY IN AMERICA! SO MOVE HERE NOW!

It’s a pity “Concorde” isn’t flying anymore, I mean all you have to do is hop on it and you’ll be in the U.K within 2. ½ hours or so, get the tube to the West End drop in to “HMV” buy the film catch a movie at the “Empire Leicester Square” then get the tube back to Heathrow airport back on to “Concorde” arrive back at you home destination grab a cab and with less than 24hours you’ll be watching “Star Wars Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith” by which time I’ve watched it some 3 times and tripping of my head and writing a short review and posting it on the Film-Tech forums….LOL [Wink]

It's been said before that Lucas plans a mega boxset with tons of extras of all 6 SW films once they're all done, whether this includes re-editing them and adding footage, I dont know, but we certainly haven't seen the last of them on DVD I'm sure.

Andy get real. The Borg have nothing to do with this. Get your mind back to reality please. The discs are instructed to detect if the players run off of 50Hz or 60Hz power. If it detects 50Hz or anything other than strict region 1 (that includes region free) the disc becomes unplayable in any player. You have to have a region 1 ONLY player that runs off of US 60Hz, so you'll have to import a player as well and maybe a power plant. Even if you can get 60Hz power over there you still have to deal with the GPS devices that are built into every US DVD player. If the player does not have this GPS the disc won't work. If the GPS detects it is not in the US it will not work. You lose, like always!

This movie will sound like crap with all of those random speakers you haphazardly placed throughout your garage or whatever it is. But at least it'll look sharp on that 13 inch TV you have!

New DVD CAP Code makes it's debut with "Revenge of the Sith." Just so it will show up better on smaller screens, the dots will be larger than Jabba's man-boobs. However, if you play them in slow motion scan, the dots will spell out the words, "If you can read this, BOY ARE YOU A NERD!!!"

15 pounds? That's like $24 over here. Ouch. Our Batman Begins will be $15 (about 8 pounds or maybe 16 kilos. Whatever weighs more). I will have it in less than 24 hours. America is the land of opportunity. Oh, and my version won't be increased in speed up to 25fps. PAL framerate sucks ass, but I'm sure you know that.

Did you say somewhere that your speakers are set to 105db for each of the front channel speakers and 110db for the subwoofer? That is incredibly wrong. All of the equipment in my room is THX certified. Does that mean I have myself a THX cinema?

You would not believe the THX certified 115db JBL SPL THX SRD OMG! I watched it in certified THX! Did I mention that I watched it in THX? Well I did watch in in THX! In fact it was 105db THX JBL SPL JBL THX SPL JBL THX db JBL!!!!!! Each and ever db was THX certified by SPL. I think I will mention THX in every god damned post I ever make, just like Andy. All hail JBL THX SPL 5.1!

Naw, you need some huge, custom made vinyl logos to apply to the cabinets (cut from of official JBL artwork of course). Have plenty of THX and Dolby logos too -even that 40th anniversary thingie.

Head on over to brands of the world for all of your vector logo rebranding needs. JBL , THX and two dozen flavors of Dolby .

Might as well get some extra vinyl cut so that you can certify your 5.1THX SPL JBL DD street-racin' car.

Sorry, but Brands of the World sucks ass. And that includes all its attempts at Dolby and DTS logos.

I should know. I deal with a lot of authentic corporate logos and other artwork. The versions often found on the Brands of the World website are poorly done knock-offs. The level of inaccuracy is often surprising. I grabbed a Best Western logo off Brands of the World to use as a place holder in one sign design. Then I received the authentic vector art from Best Western's marketing department. The BOTW version sucked ass, just as I predicted!

I have strongly advised other graphics people I know to use logos found there ONLY for comping purposes and never for any final output.

Just as bad, all logo libraries for sale on CD are no better. They mostly have inaccurate re-creations and not authentic artwork. Either source almost never has proper color specifications.

Then you have to consider such sites and compilation CDs never have any of the useage guidelines, such as protected white space specifications, font specifications and more.

About the only easy way any casual computer user will get access to authentic corporate logos in vector form is by downloading PDFs from a corporation's website and opening the PDF within Adobe Illustrator. Very often, however, many of those PDFs are encrypted and password protected. There are hacks that can get around PDF security, but it's probably too much of a pain for most people.

In the end, even when you have a proper version of a popular trademark, you can't do much with it -at least in terms of business use- without having the useage guidelines. Gotta follow them to the letter. If you don't your customer won't get paid any of that co-op advertising money to recoup his expense on stuff like signs, website graphics, etc.

Posted by Adam Wilbert (Member # 1184) on 10-19-2005, 08:32 PM:

While I totally agree that they might not be 100% accurate for legitimate business use, who is going to be upset that their knock-off re-logoed speakers aren't pantone correct? The other option, of course, is to contact those companies directly, tell them your plan to print stickers to put on your sucky speakers to make them sound better, and then wait for said company to mail you a logo disc. Granted, the whole operation is infringing on copyright, but who is Joe if he's not against the commodification of intellectual property?

I dunno, let's look:

 -
Looks perfect to me.

 -
Perfect, except maybe the word "Video" is a bit off-centered. Easily fixed.

 -
Looks completely wrong! Please e-mail me a proper vector.

 -
Completely 100% perfect.

 -
Rough around the edges.

 -
Looks good to me. Maybe the "shine" is off? I don't think that really matters since the shine is usually in motion. Maybe it could use a bevel as well.

T-minors 10 days and counting, yes it’s only ten days now before we Brits get are hands on George Lucas’s Star Wars episode 3 Revenge of the Sith, but there is a new hope for you guys across the pond it’s called 11 days and counting, so be cool. [thumbsup]

Robert’

Hallo there by now most of the Film-Tech crew have seen my home cinema set-up.

The THX baffle wall that I plan to construct when the time is right, should take me about two weeks with such matters like cost, once that is dealt with the trail and error will start, once built and if it doesn’t work to my expectations tearing it down and restarting will be a messy affair, so this is why I have planed to firstly start of with a sound stage extending the entire width of the front, the depth of it will be the same of the JBL sub bass, the height will be around ½ inc to an 1inc above the SONY monitor.

I will have addition support holding it place, placed at each side of the SONY monitor, and then the positioning of the three-screen JBL control 5 will be calculated with the centre in the usual position, with angles of pointing it down to the sweet spot in the room, once I’ve checked it out and have determined it will be fixed into position with some small pieces of wood screwed down into the stage on each side of the JBL, with a wedge piece keeping it at the chosen angle.

Selecting the positions of the left and right screen-channels will be critical, were it’s voicing of panned sounds along with captivating my attention as well or anyone for that matter, fixing them will be same as with the centre, except they will have a slight toe in as I will be experimenting not just with (Wideband Pink Noise) but with some very complex films one that comes to mind is “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.”

Once done the construction of the vertical THX baffle wall will start, with cutting plasterboard to size one for each section where it will be addressed to and the frame work to support each section as well, I’ll need a small access way or opening that will be screwed into the baffle wall, so if I needed to get to any one of the JBL’s the access way will be placed in-between the left and centre and right and centre with room to at lest get my arms in there.

(Rockwool) will be placed within it along the walls and the baffle as well, and just thinking that I’m sensitive to that stuff so I’ll take caution with it.

So it will take a few weeks, where someone else may do it with a few days, no rush.

Anyway thank you for showing interest, as for your home cinema, start of again with matching loudspeakers for the front, and depending on the size of the room, high end bookshelf models are recommended, one there far easy to install, and multiple surrounds.

Hope it works out for you.

Joe,

The Dolby Digital logo, but just a bit off. I'll e-mail you a PDF showing actual measurements of the elements. Too bad it's an outdated design. The newer Dolby logos have the Eurostile "Dolby" letters blown up too big for the container rectangle.

The DVD Video logo: decent attempt, but still off a bit. I have a collection of authentic marks from SPE/Sony. It's pretty amazing how much trouble they went through to develop specific DVD logos for lots of different point sizes. The brand marks even have all the cuts adjusted to account for ink flow/dot gain.

The DTS Digital Surround logo is just hideous. Whoever did that recreation needs to have his Crayons confiscated.

The Pioneer logo: again pretty close, but not perfect. I downloaded that BOTW website version and compared it to logos I extracted out of a couple product manuals and their 2005 annual report. The paths don't quite line up. Different placements of control points. Most people wouldn't know (much less care) about the difference. But I wouldn't use that BOTW version on any electronic store promotional stuff.

SDDS logo? How the hell can I know? I'm having trouble trying to dig up one of the copies I have of it. It's been a long time since I've cared to bother looking into that format!

THX - looks like some JPEG bitmap output from Photoshop. Not flat vector art. Just pull up some Denon audio video receiver owner's manual PDFs, open them in Adobe Illustrator and you'll have some good THX logos that way, dude!

Yes I noticed that when “Obi-Won” is fighting “Jango-Fet” what ever his name is, not sure if it’s the rain that’s making the image look a bit queer around the edges, I can deal with it Joe’ remember what the early days of visual effects "Voyage dans la Lune, Le/A Trip to the Moon" by "Georges Melies" looked like, groundbreaking technology in my books, in fact there’s still plenty of magic to play with.

Film is going to stay around for many years still to come, until it retires.

Few other speakers will be able to do justice to SW EP III.
Beware: they can be very expensive.

I went by Wal-Mart to get a few grocery items. They had their 2-pack deal (the "Story of Star Wars" disc was bundled into the package). But they only had the FOOL-SCREEN versions on the floor.
[Roll Eyes]

Fool screen DVDs suck ass. Anyone who buys those stinked up discs will be regretting it later whenever they move up to a widescreen digital TV. Likely scenario: to get rid of the grey bars on the side of their DVD images, they'll zoom into the panned and scanned picture for an even more extremely screwed up experience.
[uhoh]

Needless to say, I didn't get the DVD. Since I had to wait, I'm going to find out just what is on that 2nd Wal-Mart exclusive disc (mainly to find out if it's worth getting). If it's just a fluff piece disc, then I'll price shop to possibly get a better deal elsewhere.

If the dumbasses at the Wal-Mart had put the widescreen version out on the floor they would have made a sale last night. Too bad.

I've learned the Episode III bonus disc exclusive at Wal-Mart is basically two 30 minute documentaries that simply recap what happened in the other movies. They're reported a bit cheezy and aimed for kids (particularly with R2D2 and C3PO doing the narration). 4:3 ratio, 2.0 sound. Die hard fans and completists may want to pay extra for it. But the 2-disc edition by itself is selling for $14.99 (or even less) at some places.

This is assuming you even want to have a copy of the movie.

I'll get one. I liked this one more than the other two prequels. The opening battle scene was pretty cool.

Likely scenario: to get rid of the grey bars on the side of their DVD images, they'll zoom into the panned and scanned picture for an even more extremely screwed up experience.
No they won't. Haven't you heard what fools do when they watch 4:3 images on a widescreen TV? They use the "widezoom" mode which only zooms it a little bit, stretches the sides but leaves the center unstretched. Fools!

The Wal-mart extra disc isnt too bad. Its something not available anywhere else yet, but I agree only the die-hard fans of the series will want it. Two 30 minute summarizations of each trilogy. I doubt its gonna be worth any kind of "collector value" in the future simply because Wal-Marts are EVERYWHERE and anyone who wants the bonus disc, will buy it. Its worth $5.

I'm still waiting for Andy's chapter by chapter commentary of Episode III and how the "over my head extra special turbo charged THX platinum package sound" sounds...

How much does the DVD cost without any of the bonus crap. The normal, widescreen version? $9.95?

Posted by Frank Dubrois (Member # 3042) on 11-01-2005, 08:56 PM:

Around here $14.95, with the bonus DVD at Wal-Fart, $19.95

God damn it. Has anyone noticed the text on the back of the box? It pisses me off. Here it is verbatim:

quote: Star Wars Episode III back of the box
Six never-before-seen Deleted Scenes created just for this release...
HELLO!!!! If the scenes were created just for the DVD, they, by definition, could not have been deleted from anything else. I hope the hemorroid who wrote the text on the back of the box gets AIDS, SARS, avian flu, Alzheimer's, explosive diarrhea, and acne.

I know. Thats hilarious

Also, Lucas had to have seen them, so technically, they're not "never before seen".

They are never-before-seen but NOT never-before-heard?

Andy's been awfully quiet for the last couple of days. He must be glued to his home theatre with the tenth go-round of his "Episode III" DVD!

Actually, Michael, you'll need to talk to Brad about that. Hehe.

Or else he's too busy having orgasms over Natalie Portman, or figuring out new ways to misuse the English language.

I think quite a number of film-tech members are guilty of both of those things.

I had the exact same brain aneurysm when I saw that.

Since I don't even own any version of the original trilogy, I'm waiting for the big 6-film box set before I even consider buying any of them. As long as it's NOT a huge, awkward box with a t-shirt and light-saber included, I'll get it. Just the six movies, maybe some extra discs with the bonus stuff ... that's it. For a reasonable price, I'll own them for ONCE and call it a day. And THAT's pretty much my investment in Star Wars.

I wouldn't buy such a thing, but am I the only one who HATES those fold out DVD boxes? They seriously could not be any more lame. I personally like the thin DVD boxes that the Seinfeld seasons come in. Clean. Compact. Easy to use. Whoever thought up the folding boxes needs AIDS, SARS and the whole works.

Maybe Andy went out to buy a TV and blew a nut carrying it in the house. I've been waiting his commantary....ANDY' where are you???

I kinda like Andy. His contributions here are (were?) far less obnoxious or offensive than those of some who seem to have the Golden Film-Tech Lifetime Free Pass, yet who contribute less of substance to this board than I do, if that's even possible.

Although I liked Ep 3, I don't feel compelled to buy the DVD.

Obviously, some of you fellows don't know, but Summers got temporarily banned.

They look nice, but yeah, functionally they are stupid.

What I really want is a LIST OF EPISODES on the back of the case that holds all the disks. Cripes, you have to be an expert on a TV show to shop for its DVDs.

Oops, this is a Star Wars thread. Damn, that is a good movie.

Banned? Well, at least its only temporary. I don't have anything against him, however, his daily countdown of the Episode III release was getting old. Thank god he posted his home theater pictures to keep us going.

So, The THX Man of Mystery" (Andy Summers) "we know his real name" has been banned from this site.

Was it his Home THX Cinema Pictures was the final straw or just his recent postings?.

I did like Joe R Home THX Pictures, were they taking the P#*# or just for fun and wondered where I can obtain that Calibration Microphone? [Smile]

I had a center channel speaker like Joe has. Mine was made by Sanyo, but every day at 6am it would make an obnoxious beeping noise, so I had to throw it out.

For details on the Summers ban, see Film-Yak under thread titled "HALLO-Film-Tech-WEEN" and prepare to laugh.
