Can anyone recommend a windows DVD ripper program , preferably one that will rip into AVI files or MPEG .

I don't know of any good all-in-one solutions for Windows. Mac users should check out Handbrake. It has a very simple interface, but lets you tweak codecs, quality, etc. I use it to back up all my DVDs. A laptop + a drive full of 700MB movies is a lot more portable than a laptop and a giant DVD binder... [Big Grin]

There is an experimental Windows version...experimental meaning almost definitely unstable. I haven't tried it. Use at your own risk.

I use dvdshrink, its freeware and very good.

I recommend a combination of AnyDVD and DVDShrink (free). AnyDVD is updated quite often to cope with more exotic copy protection.
