I do not have THE MUSIC MAN on Blu Ray yet but look forward to picking it up tomorrow. It has gone through a lot of restoration and the reviews I have read and the screen caps I had seen looked terrific. Because the film was shot in 8 perf 35mm Technirama, I am expecting a picture quality as sharp as THE SEARCHERS another film shot in another 8 perf process, VistaVision.

Claude - "The Music Man" is one of those classics I've never gotten around to seeing. Everyone tells me it's great and I will love it. The BR disc arrives tomorrow from Netflix.

I have had several IB prints of the "Music Man" over the years including a 4 track mag copy. I can guarantee you that "Music Man" will blow the pants off "The Searchers" as far as image qulaity goes. Probably why they've put so much money and effort into it. It's always been my favorite musical...no other actors back then could have played the parts in that film... perfect casting! It still is and always will be my standard to judge other Technirama flms by as well as one of the best if not THE BEST looking 1960s I.B. Tech film. I wish they'd make a few new 70mm prints while they can still be made so we could hear those wonderful tracks properly again!

Hi-5 to you on that one Mark! It is just so all around good that it hurts. And I too have run 4trk mag IBTech prints for three engagements and the damn thing just jumps off the screen. Audiences would search out my co-director and myself to thank us personally for running it. Listening to our patrons' obvious excitement and delight as they came out of the theatre each show was reward money can't buy.

My 91 year old mother is now in a hospital in serious condition and going to the store to buy this movie is not on my priority list right now until I feel she will recover from her bout with pneumonia. I am posting these comments from her hospital room only because I want to keep my mind occupied and not dwell on the sad situation I am now faced with as much as possible. Her doctors and nurses said she is responding well to the medication and treatment they are providing and that is very promIsing.

I first saw THE MUSIC MAN in a theatre and I remember it was a fantastic show but the theatre I saw the movie (Princess) did not have a four track mag print although the theatre had the stereo sound system. I have had the DVD for years and the picture and the sound quality was wonderful but I am sure the Blu-Ray will blow the DVD away. I am looking forward to reading your comments about the BD after you receive and watch the movie.

Yes, an excellent movie!

Got the original WB gold labeled Stereo LP of the soundtrack.

Saw it in 1964 at a drive-in being the co-hit of "Incredible Mr. Limpet", which was the main feature - which I now have on DVD. (Booth was Motiographs with Futura II's buring 13.6mm rotators and the light hitting a 120' wide screen from only 165 feet back. Boy! "Music Man" on that wide screen defintely looked great in a 13 yr old kid's eyes...)

Dear Mark & Frank,

Thank you very much for your very encouraging words. Mama was doing fine yesterday and all of her vitals were normal and she was alert. The only troubling factor was when she was breathing through her mouth and making a wheezing sound. Other than that she was sitting up yesterday afternoon and very alert and talking with a slurred speech which she was not doing the other day. She already had three chest X Rays taken of her lungs and the results show her pneumonia is not getting better but worse. Other than that, all of her vitals are still normal. Doctor Hubbert said he will change Mama's medication and said it will take at least two more days to see if it helped. If it did not, I guess I will have to expect the worse and be very grateful for my mother being a very important part of my life for a little over seventy years during her very long 91 years of life.

How I wish I was not faced with this crisis in my life because I was really looking forward to the BD of THE MUSIC MAN.

I received a call from the hospital at 4:00 this morning when I was still in bed and was told my mother took a turn for the worse and is back in the Intensive Care Room ,and temporally on a life support system. Her doctor feel her time has come and unless a miracle occurs within the next two days, they will turn off all her life support systems at that time so she go and join my late father who had passed away also from pneumonia in the same hospital twelve years during the same month of February.

My heart is very heavy now when I will lose the most important person in my life in a few hours and I want to remind all of you who still have parents to take care of them because they will not always be with you.

Claude, I am also sorry that you will be facing the loss of a beloved other.

I lost both parents about 12 years ago, and while it is not a good feeling to have, it is a part of the cycle of life.

It helps to remember the goodness of the past, rather than dwelling on the impending loss.

A very noted lung specialist has been called to see if he can help and after talking to him, I see a very slight glimmer of hope but if things does not work out, within forty eight hours, we will allow Mama to go in dignity and be with dad. I think he will be very happy to have her at his side again.

Yes, Claude... you do have somethig good to look forword to when you get the Music Man! Looks and sounds fantastic! They left the scratches intact in the rear projection plates during the opening part of the film! Look out the train windows just before the guys on the train find out he is Prof. Hill! Nasty RP scratches!

My mother will be joining my late father as soon as my brother and his wife arrives at the ICU room to be with her when her life support system she is on will be turned of and Mama will be allowed to go with dignity and it will be fast. My brother is expected at any time.

My heart right now is filled with grief but in time, joy will return and I will look forward to seeing THE MUSIC MAN on Blu Ray.

I did that several times before she left us today - February 7, 2010 at 12:46pm this afternoon. As much as I love movies and everything about it as well as my photography profession, I have never loved anything as much as the intense love I had for my very beloved mother. I know she is happy now that she is together with my father who passed away twelve years ago. I feel very lonely right now and kind of in a daze. Rather than not do anything now that she is no longer with me, I had finally decided to go to the Dole Cannery 18 tomorrow and see AVATAR in Digital 3-D IMAX. While I am at it , I will try and see if Wal-mart or Best Buy has THE MUSIC MAN and will watch it tomorrow night . Mama knew I love movies very much and I know she will be very happy if I did not go into depression and do happy things instead. I now realize if I do not do the things I enjoy doing, I will go out of my mind.

As one who lost my dad, then my first wife then my mother, I have great empathy with you. My experience tells me that you will not enjoy those movies as much as you will later. Then every time you hear melodies from The Music Man it will give you a warm memory of your dear mum.

Thanks very much for the kind words everyone. I really wanted to get my mind of the passing of my mother today and decided to go to Best Buy and buy the Blu-Ray of THE MUSIC MAN. Fortunately they had two copies in stock and bought one and watched it tonight. I tried to kid myself into thinking I would enjoy this wonderful movie at this time but Ron was right. . Now was not the time. I did play the movie in it's entirety but I only thought about my beloved mother throughout the movie.

I was right, the BD of THE MUSIC MAN was awesome.. I am very happy with my Samsung 1080p HDTV because the picture quality was just out of this world and it looked like I was watching a 70mm print because the film was photographed in the large 8 perf Technirama film process. The color cinematography and DTS sound was also wonderful.

Yes, continue to go out and do the things you enjoy, even now. Maybe especially now. Your mom enjoyed that you receive such great satisfaction and pleasure from the work and hobbies you pursue. We should all be so fortunate.

As for The Music Man, would you believe I've never seen it? At least not all the way through. A great thing about Blu-ray is that it is making me want to see films I've never gotten around to before, either on the big screen or on video. DVD did that for me a little too, but I was never a fan of how 2.39 AR pictures looked in standard definition, even on anamorphic DVD. Blu-ray may not be perfect (what is?), but it's just good enough that I do want to check out rep titles like The Music Man as they come out on the little blue disc.

Day one without my mother has been rough but I am doing everything possible to keep my mind and body busy. Almost all of the time I spent with my mother has been doing post production Photoshop work on my laptop computer in her room at her nursing home. I am now faced with doing all of that work in a big empty house that hold so much memories of Mama but I seem to have found a solution to that problem thanks to Film Tech member Vern Dias when we talked on the phone today. Our public library has a section with power outputs for laptop computers and one of the library staff worker told me I will be more than welcome to do my work there.

I have not got the hang of posting pictures here at Film Tech but if any of you want to see pictures of my mother that I had posted at FACEBOOK, go there to see them. I do not know if you have to sign up to see my pictures and read my comments and those of my friends without joining but it is free if you decide to do it. It has been exactly two weeks since my mother had passed away and each day after her passing has been different. I was told to keep busy and continue to do the the things I used to enjoy before she went to her rest and it helped somewhat. I finally saw AVATAR, and I have been posting here more than usual and thank God, I had some photo assignments that kept me busy. The tremendous pain of losing her only comes when I am not doing anything and have time think about how wonderful she was and wish she was still alive. I felt exactly the same way when my father passed away twelve years ago but I took comfort at the fact that I still had my mother so the pain of losing him did not last too long.. Now that they are both gone, I am wondering how long will I continue to feel the way I do now? Before Mama's passing, I was very happy and content. I am still happy but at the same time, there is an emptiness in my heart from losing her and was wondering long will I have to endure this?

Actually I'd say that it'll never completely pass. I guarantee you that you will always miss your mom at least as much I miss mine. My mom died nearly 20 years ago and barely a day goes by that I don't think about her in some way. What will happen though is that you'll finally realize that you have to get on with your life and get back to as close to normal as possible and the greiving will then lessen. This happens differently for every person out there... It's best to just keep moving forword though as much as you possibly can!

As I had mentioned, my dad died a little over twelve years ago and like you Mark, I thought about him almost every day before I lost my mother . It was painful at the time of his passing but it went away and was replaced only with happy memories of him. I have experienced different kinds of moods since Mama died. There were days when I was feeling good and grateful she was with me all these years and not sad at all. There have also been times when I wish she was still alive and I was with her at her nursing home. Each day since her passing has been different. Some good and some not so good. I only hope it will not take too long for me to get over the grief of losing her and only remember the happy memories I have of her and dad. Thank you for understanding the pain I am experiencing and being patient with me.

Since my dad passed away (last May) I have missed him every day too, but I have been comforted by the knowledge that he's now happy and restored to full health. He was in a lot of, maybe not pain, but "uncomfortableness" the last few years of his life, so the thought of him being free of that makes me feel better.

How old was your dad, Mike? My dad was a few months shy of his 90th birthday when he had passed away twelve years ago and I still miss him. I felt almost the same way I am now feeling about my mother's passing at the time but the sadness went away after a short period of time and replaced by happy memories I have of him. I feel the sadness I have over the death of my mother will linger much longer because I was much closer to her than my dad and I have been with her almost everyday since I closed my portrait studio back in 1998. The best of those years was when she was at the nursing home these past five and a half years. It is probably not spending time anymore with her at the NH that is making it difficult for me adjust to a new lifestyle and get on with my life. I know in time, I will be happy again and have only fond memories of my parents instead of sadness.

Claude - Dad was 77. He and I worked together at the parts store from June of 1972 until he got sick. He was a walking encyclopedia of auto parts knowledge, so I miss him on both a "dad" level and a "co-worker" level. What he was not too good at was long conversations, so we may not have had the kind of interaction you and your mom did in these last few years. But, we still shared many a laugh and lots of good times.

I have to consider myself very fortunate to have both of my parents live a very long life compared to your dad who died at an age only seven year older than I am now. . You have very good reasons for missing him. very much after after losing him at that age. I hope your mother is fine and well and in good health. My advise to you is to do everything possible to make her happy and devote as much love and time time as you can to her because before you know it, she will be gone. I did all of that but I still miss my mother very much but rejoice at the fact that that I had her much longer than most people my age.

I am now going to eat my dinner and when I finish I will watch a double feature Blu Rayt Disc I bought today. It is Sandra Bullock in MISS CONGENIALITY and MISS CONGENIALITY 2 I never saw these movies before but I heard they are very entertaining . I also bought the standard Blu-Ray edition of CASABLANCA and AMADEIS and will watch them during the next two nights I heard only good things about the picture quality of CASABLANCA so I am really looking forward to seeing it possibly tomorrow night.

MY mother had a very beautiful service today and I think with that, I had found closure I know there will be times when I will miss her but now that her memorial service is over, I feel much better. To all of you who had taken the time to comfort me when I was in grief, THANK YOU! You made all the difference in the world when you had made me realize you all cared about me and for that I will always be grateful.

I am planning to see two movies in a theatre this weekend and already looking forward to seeing 2012 on Blu-Ray next Tuesday after I had missed seeing it in a theatre. I think I will revisit THE MUSIC MAN on Blu-ray tomorrow night and perhaps enjoy more than I did a few days after my mother had passed away.

Thank you for your post about THE MUSIC MAN. I didn't even realize it was available until I saw your post. I watched it last night as my very first Blu-Ray on the new Barco DP1200 in my small auditorium (16-ft wide screen) using a PS3. WOW! I could not believe how great it looked. I could tell that I need to adjust the output of the PS3 (can't do it - no thanks to Sony for leaving out something basic like adjusting brightness and contrast). I have watched this movie on DVD many, many times but it was almost like seeing it for the first time.

What a difference a well-done Blu-Ray is going to make for showing older titles. No more scratches or dirt or missing (or non-existent) DTS discs. I can give a performance of a show that I can be proud of instead of embarrassed at the quality of the available print.

I was very busy the past couple of night watching a lot of great movies on Blu-Ray. I just saw TOY STORY 2 tonight and ready to go to bed.During the past week, I also saw THE AFRICAN QUEEN and posted my review here the other day and that is another one you get and watch. Others were THE DUTCHESS, THE BLADE RUNNER, UP IN THE AIR, THE BLIND SIDE and a few others. By the way, if you are interested in picking up both of the TOY STORY movies on Blu-Ray, Costco has them on sale for $20.00 each if you bought both of them. The thing that make it a great deal is a movie ticket voucher for TOY STORY 3 valued at $8.50 that come with each of the movie on BD. Less $17.00 for the two vouchers, the two TOY STORY movies in Blu -Ray is only $23.00. If you are interested, the sale is only until Wednesday.
