Like most recent DVD recorders, my two Panasonic machines can record & playback DVD-R or DVD+R discs, plus RAM. The advantage I see is with DVD+R, I can burn a copy onto a –R or +R blank media. Any comments?

1) The DVD-R (pronounced "DVD dash R") and -RW media formats are officially approved by the standards group DVD Forum. The DVD Forum was founded by Mitsubishi, Sony, Hitachi, and Time Warner, so it has tremendous industry support for its technical standards.

2) DVD+R ("DVD plus” R) and +RW formats are not approved by the DVD Forum standards group, but are instead supported by the DVD+RW Alliance. The DVD+RW Alliance is supported by Sony, Yamaha, Philips, Dell, and JP, so it also has tremendous industry support for its technical standards.

Advantage with the "+R" is the lack of need to finalize a disc before using in conventional players. Also the "+R" system can do multisession burning.

Maybe, but NOBODY actually says that. People eaither say "Dee vee dee arrr" or "Dee vee dee plus arrr" (yes, the same sound pirates make).

DVD-R is supposedly more compatible, but +R needs to be used when burning multi-layered discs as -R is kind of weak that way. To be honest, I've found +R media to be more compatible, especially when burning AVCHD discs (Blu-ray content on standard DVD discs).

I've mostly heard them pronounced by others as "DVD Minus R" and "DVD Plus R".

I only hear the minus when they are specifically trying to distinguish it from the PLUS.

I have had more luck with the DVD+R discs as far as compatability.

I second that.

Just remember the DVD+/-R rule of thumb: When recording DVDs, you've got a 50/50 chance that which ever type you think will be more compatible, either +R or -R , (and you can read the compatibilty assurances on the DVD label all you want) but the disc you record will NOT play back on the one player you need it to play back on. And THAT'S a digital fact.
