I currently rent a digital PVR from my local cable company (rogers). I really like the PVR but I almost never go up past channel 50 so I don't need all the digital chanels. The rental on the unit with the infamous system access fee gets up there so I would love to be able to use a PVR on just the channels that I can get without having a digital box.
My computer has a PVR built into it but I found it really annoying to burn everything to dvd to watch it on my TV.
anyone know if there is a stand alone PVR available?

An analog PVR might be better known as a VCR.

well, a VCR doesn't have the listings and it's harder to record. The nice thing about the PVR is I can program it to record all showings of a series without having to manually set it each time.

Get a VCR that offers VCR+. That way you just punch in the codes from your TV listings. That's pretty much your only choice if you want to keep it analog.

VCR+ was known as G-Code outside of the US I think.

If you have a PC that's got Win7 you could ditch the PVR and use your PC as one. The only catch is you'd have to buy a cablecard connector for your PC (there's one available from ATI that's been out quite a while and a newer one from Creton that lets one cablecard work with up to 4 tuners). Of course, you'd have to rent the actual cablecard from your cable company, but I'm sure that it is significantly cheaper than the full PVR.

Oh and the last thing you'd have to do is go into Windows Media Center then into the "extras" section and run the "digital cable advisor."

Chris, there is no analog version of Windows 7. He asked for something non-digital. VHS is his only realistic option.

Go and buy an old cable-ready TiVo. All of those can record from analog channels just fine. However, I believe if you want the guide data you need to shell out $12.95 a month.
