I was just about a year old when Walt Disney released DUMBO and was too young. I did get to see it when it was re released ten years in 1949 when I was ten and it has always been one of my favorite Disney films. That was the last time I saw it until last night when I watched the 70th Anniversary release of the film on Blu-Ray and totally enjoyed it very much again. It just amazes me very much how a film that is almost as old as me could look so beautiful after seventy years on Blu-Ray. The color is stunning and look as though it was a newly produced Disney film. Unlike BAMBI, SNOW WHITE, FANTASIA and his other early full length animated features, the animation is very simple without the use of multi plane photography but it is still excellent in it;'s own way. DUMBO features a newly mixed 7.1 soundtrack as well as it's original mono sound but the stereo mix is my preferred way to listen to the soundtrack because it still retains it's original mono sensation with the sound feeling more fuller especially with the music track. In addition to the movie, there is a very interesting feature regarding the restoration of the original nitrate elements of DUMBO and other early Disney films. There are also two short "Silly Symphonies" shorts in high definition bout I did not have time last night to watch them.

Slightly OT, but I remember after having been shown Electrocuting an Elephant as a student, one of the others remarked that Disney should do a remake, featuring the hit song Did You See an Elephant Fry...

the disc has a great 'cine-explore' feature length doc. However if you have the older DVD version, keep it, it retains the John Canemaker commentary track which the blu-ray doesn't include.

I once had a virtually mint IB print of Dumbo go vs on me. Now that makes you cry.
