I have just finished setting up my home theater for 7.1 sound, and I wonder what movie on Blu Ray has the best soundtrack?

5.1 mixes:

- Battle LA (crap movie, amazing sound)
- Akira (in 192khz/24-bit audio)
- Super Speeway
- War of the Worlds

Flight of the Phoenix is pretty good for 5.1 DTS HDMA.

Nightmare Before Christmas is one of the few 7.1 remixes that blows away the original mix (by far). It's also one of the few Dolby TrueHD mixes that you don't have to crank waaaay up since Dolby TrueHD tends to be much more quiet than everything else.

Star Trek (the newest one), while 5.1 is pretty badass even though it's Dolby TrueHD. Dolby must have gotten their act together or something with the "later" releases).

Toy Story 2 sounds great. 5.1 DTSHDMAEX. Toy Story 1 and 3 sound OK.

The newest Rambo movie is 7.1 DTSHDMA and it's not bad.

Ghostbusters on Blu-ray doesn't sound anywhere near as good as the DVD, so don't play that one.

For a more subtle mix, try Seven.

@ Joe: in regards to Star Trek (2009) I agree about the sound, I really have to turn up my amplifier up for extra oomph and loudness.

Toy Story 2's mix is great and since Mike has a 7.1 setup he'll be able to extract the DTS-ES rear center channel of sound - which has a lot of fun effects.

The Star Wars films in 6.1 is also commendable since the three speaker surround sound layup is omnipresent and packs a punch notably during the Pod race from Episode 1.

'subtle' mixes I also recommend include:
- Microcosmos (UK release Region A playable)
- Crimson Wing

The trick is finding something that hasn't been remixed for home video! This list is from DVDs, not blurays, but may help if you are looking for the ORIGINAL 5.1 mix that hasn't been crapped up for home video release:

Absolutely! Those are the best gun sound effects I have ever heard in any movie. I can actually tell just by listening to those clips if the HF roll-off is accurate. It is part of my check reel.

By some karmic coincidence, I bumped into this RTA of a (presumably) some bit of Tron on another forum, so it looks like something of an exercise for the .1

So far I've watched Fast Five, Pirates 4, Top Gun, 2012, and Ben Hur. I watched parts of Pirates 3, but had to turn it off halfway through lol. The sound on Pirates 4 was awesome, as was Fast Five. I also watched parts of Baraka, and the sound & video on that seemed top notch too.

(if anyone wants to add more 5.1 titles to this thread, that would be great... I didn't mean to limit it to 7.1.)

I still need to get around to comparing the Blu-Ray with the six-track mag.

I was pretty impressed with the mix for LOGAN'S RUN, although it does admittedly pale in comparison to many of the others listed here.

Gonna have to pick up Iron Man (part 2 any good?) and I think my dad has Close Encounters. I played parts of Transformers 2 and 3, and wow that sounded awesome in the beginning... I'll give those a screening later on in the month.

Iron Man 2 is no good. I have Close Encounters on Blu-ray and don't recall it sounding particularly impressive. I've made some changes since I last watched it so maybe I'll have to give it another go.

So he's letting the millons who shelled out $200 millon at the box office to hear a half-assed, unfinished film, he's letting them all have a copy of the BluRay with the FINISHED 7.1 track, but he's deducting the amount they all already paid for their tickets from the price of the Blu-Ray, right?

Oh wait, he did it the other way around; maybe he reduced the ticket price at the theatre because he knew the soundtrack was missing 100 changes he didn't get around to making or adding the dozen missing elements he neglected to include. He made sure everyone got to see his unfinished film for a $3 ticket price, right? Yah, that's what he must have done because how unethical would he be if he knew he was going to hawk his BluRay sales by telling everyone that what they already paid to hear in the theatres was shit so they better shell out three times what they already paid AGAIN to hear what he REALLY meant. And at the year's anniversay no doubt he'll remember that there were another dozen MORE mistakes he has to fix and he'll release his DIRECTOR'S cut.
