Hmm. For millions of dollars I could build my own movie theater, install dual 4K projection, the sound system of my choice, management staff, employees, etc. And I would have my own supply of 4K DCP movies and actually be able to make money with the operation!

This IMAX home theater thing sounds like a colossal waste of money, particularly if the end user is going to be stuck playing Blu-ray movies.

I would love to hear them explain why the digital lie-max theatrical system is 2K and the home lie-max version is 4K. More pixels for a smaller screen?
n
And, yes, I believe that the construction cost for a modern multiplex is something in the $1-2MM/screen range. For a brand-new building, including all equipment.

This is stupid.

Here's the link to the Imax Private Theatre website.

Gizmodo story
quote:
Oh Man, a Custom 4K Imax Home Theater Would Change Everything

The summer blockbusters are already hitting theaters, and if you're sane, you're going to go see them in an Imax theater. It's the big screen, only bigger, and more awesome. Now, you can take the IMAGE MAXIMUM experience home with you—provided you've got the guap to buy one of Imax's new pricey custom installs.

If you buy an Imax Private Home Theater, the company will come to your mansion and design a badass theater from the ground up, from the geometry of the room, to the placement of the seats to the 7.1 channel surround sound, to the floor-to-ceiling curved screen.

Imax is offering its private clients technology far superior to what you get at your local multiplex. Instad of the standard Imax projectors with paltry 2K resolution, your custom theater will get dual 4K projectors, one for 2D and one for 3D. This thing looks ill.

Our best guess is that this beast uses the Kodak 4K projection technology Imax bought last year, and will be available to theaters for purchase later this year. The new projectors are good for screens over 120-feet wide. You know, because the standard 71-foot panoramic screen just isn't good enough. And, yes, Imax will constantly monitor your theater to make sure everything's running properly and provide 24-hour support.

Sadly, this lifestyle enhancement will be ruinously expensive. According to at least one report, it'll cost $1-$2 million, depending on the install. Whatever. Worth it. [Imax via Slashfilm]

If you're sick of paying an arm and a leg to take your family to the movies every week, maybe there's a solid investment you can make that will pay off over the years. Everyone dreams of having a movie theater in their home, and nowadays, that might not be that bad of an idea. Now IMAX is making that dream even sweeter as the big, big screen company responsible for the biggest, clearest and loudest movie theaters in the world wants to bring that experience to home theaters. This will surely cost you more than a few thousand dollars, but for the ultimate, financially comfortable cinephile, it just makes sense. More below!

We're not sure just how much this installation costs, but in order to find out, you have to "request a personal introduction," which means, "If you're not rich, don't waste our time." Here's what IMAX says about their newly unveiled private theater plan:

With breathtaking 2D & 3D images, flawless sound and special theatre design to create a more immersive effect, everything about the IMAX Private Theatre is state of the art and custom-designed to deliver the ultimate in-home entertainment experience.

IMAX designs every aspect of the IMAX Private Theatre – from our renowned projection and sound technology to the room acoustics and theatre geometry – to work as a fully integrated solution that is optimized specifically for your home.

IMAX’s team of specialists play an integral role in the entire process, working directly with your architects, developers, interior designers, and custom installers to ensure everything is built to IMAX’s exacting performance standards while catering to your specific design preferences.

While this is only something the super wealthy will enjoy, could this be a sign of things to come for home entertainment? Things like VOD and streaming are gaining ground everyday, and maybe in the future people will have their own theaters projecting onto a big screen whatever content they choose. If better quality, higher definition TV's keep growing in size and quality, then that could be where we're headed. In the meantime, if there's any rich readers out there looking to throw some money around, I'll be glad to give out my address so we can get to work on my own IMAX theater.

From the IMAX marketing fluff site:

quote:
IMAX's custom, patented surround-sound system features 7.1 channel laser-aligned loudspeakers that deliver the ultimate in power, dynamic range and precision for a truly visceral experience you can feel.
Yeah, feel in your ears while they are bleeding.

I'm calling B.S. on this. No one in their right mind will buy this, even if they have the money to spare. I have a home theater possibly today worth under $1,000 and compared to most home theater setups (and some actual commercial theaters), I hate to pat myself on the back, but it rocks! I have no idea how this $1-2 million setup is going to compare. Probably will be loud, harsh, boomy, and ridiculous even.

Oh, and why are they using 4K projectors and 7.1 sound for the private theater project and not using that money to convert commercial 2K and 5.0 theaters quicker up to speed? It's totally pointless.

how do you laser align a speaker?

Why is everyone so shocked about this? I doubt there is a single person on this board that actually thinks IMAX is anything but a scam these days. With them devaluing their commercial installs by certifying anybody willing to cut them a check, they need to grab up the home market money as fast as they can before the general public wises up.

The whole thing stinks of THX.

The only thing it changes is the amount of debt I would owe.

What? I think insane is a better word for this sentence.

Only superior to Liemax screens. Not superior to many run-of-the-mill screens out there.

What the fuck?

how do you laser align a speaker?
Tape a laser pointer to the top of the speaker cabinet or horn, turn on laser pointer, point laser dot where you want the speaker to point, market laser-aligned speaker nonsense because the word "laser" sounds cool and reminds people of Star Wars which was the shit in 1977.

Really?? As said 1-2mill buys you a whole damn multiplex that would/could earn u a profit. IMAX wtf man!? The home version gets 7.1 and 4k but not there own comm. installs?? I thought IMAX couldn't get anymore rediculous. You'd think anybody that would be that serious about HT would realize how insanely overpriced this is?

Posted by Aaron Garman (Member # 1653) on 05-01-2013, 10:42 PM:

I wonder if they'll be allowed to spec VHS or LaserDisc for these too?

The LaserDisc would match the laser aligned speakers.

Maybe ending a sexy technology with the letter "X" is a bad idea. [Big Grin]

In all seriousness, I think in both cases digital undermined the relevance and marketability of these technologies in cinema.

So, what is the playback device for the Imax system? DCP? Blu-Ray? Something else?

Will they sell me a 15/70 home system?

Posted by Frank Angel (Member # 248) on 05-02-2013, 01:15 PM:

Scott, they will probably GIVE you a 15/70 system gladly if you will pay to have one carted away to your house! And of course your are right to be concerned about what's the source material that you get to play on this 2 million plus dollar, 4K IMAX Home Believing is Seeing Experience system -- what are you going to feed the thing once you've paid your rich man's bragging rights money? Will the studios then gladly send you DCPs just for the asking and because you are a filthy rich fart? And just for the asking, will they send you the KEYS for every film you want to show and when you want to show it? Yah...sure they will.

Or maybe you only get to play titles that IMAX has converted to play in their commercial theatres. Perhaps they are of the mind that their proprietary DMX conversion process thing (? are those the right letter ?) can somehow defy the laws of physics and magically thu IMAX alchemy, turn 2K source material into 4K resolution on the home screen.

Then again, this is for RICH people. And RICH people won't be doing this because they understand the difference between 2K and 4K, but they just want to be able to say they are better than everyone else. Given the reliability of that human trait, there will be a market for this -- believe it. Of course then when some other filthy rich old fart goes out and buys a Dolby Atmos system, he'll be able to smugly tell the rich old fart who's got himself an IMAX home system, that his home theatre with Atmos sound has better sound than the IMAX home theatre guy. Ego is very powerful among the rich and famous.

When I took Marketing 101, we learned about the "Law of the Most Expensive" which says, no matter what the product, if you price and market yours to be the most expensive of any other manufacturer, there will always be a group of people, albeit very small, who will purchase the product precisely BECAUSE it is the most expensive and for no other reason. There are people who truly believe that the mark of the BEST is by having the most expensive. This is Rich Think. So for the manufacture who uses that law, at least with one line of his products, the trick is to price the item high enough verses the small number who are of that mindset, so that he can still make a profit. IMAX obviously is relying on that law to work for them.

Lol nice Jesse!

On the video the screen array looks like it uses a phantom center? Why would they choose to do that? Size constraints?

Posted by Manny Knowles (Member # 1171) on 05-04-2013, 01:13 AM:

if you want it with a "hard" center channel, it'll cost you an extra $1M.

If only it was DIGITALLY laser aligned by an iPhone app I would totally get this done in my house!

Nah, I think I will wait until the price comes down a bit [Wink]

In a year or two and we can buy flat-screen TVs and Logitech speaker systems with IMAX sticker for a few bucks extra...

Easy, you just need some frickin' sharks, not just plain sharks but those with laser beams.

PS: Wouldn't a single top-of-the line 4K projector be able to produce sufficient amounts of light to "burn right trough your retina" on such a small screen?!
