I finally got around to watch the 3D Bluray of Rogue One last night and I have one question, Why did they bother with 3D.
I did not see this theatrically, but I saw nothing in the Bluray where the 3D enhanced the presentation. Technically, it was a well done conversion, but none of the shots were composed to take advantage of the depth, which was surprising since there was so much to work with. Usually for me, 3D enhances the movie and brings me into the image. This seemed more like, we can add a little depth, so we did.
How was the 3D when this played theatrically?

I didn't watch Rogue One in 3D, but had the same thought when I was watching it. It just didn't seem to be made for 3D.
Business wise 3D accounted for about 1/4 of our gross for the first 2 weeks. With The Force Awakens 3D was about 40% of the gross the first week about 25% the second week. Because The Force Awakens was so much busier, it's possible the 3D was inflated due to the availability of tickets more than a desire to see 3D.
That being said, I do think the 3D was very well done and effective on The Force Awakens. One particular 3D effect that sticks out was when Imperial Star Destroyer seems to float out over the audience. This was a money shot that didn't disappoint.
