An IMAX® 15/70 setup (projection, light, sound) will run you in excess of a million bucks.

There are other manufacturers that make 15/70 projectors, but they are still outrageously pricey.

You would have to do incredible modifications to a single screen house to properly show 15/70 in the way it was meant to be projected (IMAX almost requires the trademark gigantic screen- anything else would likely be perceived as a 'rip-off'), and would be better off running the normal 35mm prints of the 35>15/70 blowups.

There is also the 8/70 option, but once again, you are gonna need a biiiiig screen.

"Specially formatted 35mm film" means that the print was printed a step lighter at the lab to give the appearance of a brighter image when blowing it up to try and fill a giant screen.

There is an Imax MPX system that is designed for smaller screens. According to some very vague press information, this equipment will work in a standard 35mm booth and not require specialized operators. Still 15/70, as far as I can tell.

Anyone out there have more details on this? Celebration Village in Michigan is supposed to be getting this setup, but they installed a different system until the MPX is ready.

The current proposal was to use the cermax xenon lamps
Also the aspect ratio rules out the showing of standard 15 perf titles

The DMR aspect ratio is based on the 35mm aspect ratio not the IMAX ratio of 1.4:1
The MPX is a toy that will destroy the IMAX credibility just like the Multiplex large formats are eating away at a reputable market

Gordon I would have to agree with you. last I heard (in December) they were still working out the bugs. Also correct me if I am wrong but I am under the impression the rotor will be self threading. Insert the film on the input side and it comes out the output side threaded, no need to lift the hood.

If bell and howell can't get an auto loader right with the many thousand machines they sold then I doubt IMAX with the fact they have layed off all ther top engineers can

I don't know Gordon, a screen that's 70ft wide by 4.5 stories high for a room with just over 300 seats is a pretty big screen. They are still running 15/70, and I am assuming they are still getting a bright image with the same rez as a "normal" IMAX install, so how will this be perceived as less that the normal IMAX to the general public? Wouldn't the audience still see this as massively larger than normal 35mm theatres?

the name IMAX came from the term Image Maximization and it was the verticle height of the image that helps to create the sense of depth to the image
The MPX is not based on the frame shape of standard IMAX films but the smaller height utilized in the DMR transfers
