DISNEY, IMAX TEAM FOR NEW BEAUTY

Disney announced Wednesday that it plans to release an Imax version of its 1991 animated feature Beauty and the Beast on March 8, 2002 and will include a new musical number, Human Again, from the stage version of the musical. The studio said that it had never before added a new sequence to a previously released film. It marks the second time that Disney has teamed up with Toronto-based Imax. Last year it released Fantasia/2000 on 75 Imax screens, where it took in $64.4 million during a four-month run. In a statement on Wednesday, Dick Cook, chairman of Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group, said: "The success of Fantasia/2000 clearly indicates that Disney entertainment and giant-screen showmanship go together like Mickey and Minnie, and this is a relationship we want to continue." Disney also indicated that it is planning to produce Imax versions of the Broadway musical Bring In Da Noise, Bring In Da Funk, a prequel to The Black Stallion, and nature-adventure film called Birds of Prey and a film about the X Games.

My hope would be that they go back to the original digital files (if they still exist) of the "ink and paint" and CGI. Note they are adding a sequence and song, and I've heard they do intend to "enhance" the images for the large IMAX format.

I agree trying to simply blow up the 35mm YCM negative would not be the best route.

No...as John says they will go back to the original digital artwork. I ran Cyberworld in 3D at IMAX last night with sequences from ANTZ and The Simpsons included. They looked as good as IMAX would normally look.

But my only question would be whether or not all of BATB was digitally created. I know the 'Be Our Guest' sequence was and possibly some other parts...but wasn't it a bit early for the whole thing to be done that way?

I guess we'll find out in 2002.

AFAIK, much of the "ink and paint" work is now done digitally, even if the animation itself is not CGI. If so, there should have been digital files for all of B&B. That's a question only Disney can really answer.

You would have to believe this to be the case or they wouldn't put that film forward as an option to IMAX, given the fact that 35mm blown up looks like...well...crap.

If some of the animation was real ink and paint, could they possibly re-photograph the cels in IMAX? It seems like that would be a fairly straightforward though time-consuming process. Assuming of course they haven't sold some of the cels off as collectibles.

This has actualy been a wotk in progress for the past few years which tells me that they have been doing a lot of work to get it right. I was not very pleased with the animation for the village scenes but all the scenes involving the beast and the inside of tha mansion I thought looked very good. I wonder if they will do the same thing with Alladin and The lion King.
