Gord, or any IMAX projectionist.Do you need a special license to run the projectors? If so, how do you go about getting one or apprenticing for one?

In most cases Imax owns the equipment and then leases it to the theatre. They usually train the chief projectionist when it opens and then that person trains their own support staff.
In Ontario you require a projectionist license and if it is a government facility then it must also be a first class license

here in nova scotia a license is required to run 35mm film commercially -
although this may change in the future. at our imax cinema our chief
projectionist, who has had many years experience running 35/70mm film
commercially, was trained by imax prior to opening. i am the assistant
imax projectionist and i too have had many years experience running
35/70mm film commercially and i was trained in imax by our chief
projectionist, therefore a license is required and recommended but not
really necessary. personally i believe in licenses and some sort of
regulation as it tends to encourage professionalism and respect for this
craft - as do/did unions in "some" sense. other skills apart from actual
projection experience might be an inclination for basic mechanics and
electronics, some sense of photography and basic computer skills, you
should be organised with a willingness to learn.

No licence required here, just a lot of money for petrol if commuting from mainland USA.
