The official list at Warner Bros.' Web site includes several Cineplex theaters in Canada that have been converted to IMAX digital. According to Pat Marshall, Cineplex VP of communications, those theaters have not had their 15/70 projectors reinstalled, and will show DKR digitally, not on film. The only Cineplex theaters that will show DKR on film are in Toronto and Montreal.

* Indicates that the theater has both IMAX film and IMAX digital projectors. These theaters are capable of showing The Dark Knight Rises (and other films) either on film or digitally, but will probably show DKR on film.

** MPX film theater with a wide screen, not a full-height 1.33-ratio screen.

Awesome, I am going to New York this August and I wanted to watch The Dark Knight Rises in that cinema, did not know that they would play it on 70mm so that will make it even more special.

Wonder if all of these will be showing it on July 20, because Mission Impossible 4 didn't play at the Museum of Natural History until three weeks after opening day. The Udvar-Hazy Center got it first.

From my understanding some of those that converted back to 15/70 will have rights to show the film before the official opening day. At least one of the theaters that I tech for that has 15/70 will be.

In Detroit our local film IMAX (Museum install) is showing Spiderman on their schedule through 7/19 with the first DKR show on 7/20. From what I can see the other film IMAX in Michigan (across the state) has their first show still listed as Midnight on 7/19.

OK: The Museum of Natural History, the Air & Space Museum and the Udvar-Hazy Center are showing this starting July 20. So barring mass sellouts, people in the DC area who want to see this in 15/70 aren't going to have to go way out of their way to the Udvar-Hazy in Chantilly.

In New Rochelle NY we will be running film, we just had our service call. If anything goes wrong during the film run they will switch over to digital till the film issue is resolved. I have a feeling that once an issue arises with film, Regal will favor the digital for the entire run of TDKR and cancel film IMAX runs. If they do that there will be alot of upset people demanding passes or a refund after discovering what they are watching is a cheat.

You're absolutely right. I would be pissed and would demand passes AND refunds. We did that when the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie turned out to be digital at King of Prussia. Sure seemed like a bait and switch to me. "Yeah, it's still IMAX..."

I completely agree too. I made sure that the White River is showing it in film not digital, plus I don't think they have digital anyways. I would be pissed too, if I found out it was in digital and went to all that trouble to make sure I was watching it in a theater with film capabilities.

Deadline Hollywood: Black eye for IMAX in front of the media tonight. A source tells me that a botched IMAX screening of The Dark Knight Rises sent about 100 reporters and critics home mid-movie tonight. Warner Bros apologized to the pissed-off invitees and is holding an 8 AM re-screening for them just prior to the Saturday press junket with all the film’s stars. An IMAX rep explained this was the only IMAX print of the movie on the entire West Coast:

“The computer device that syncs the picture and sound broke about 1 hour into the screening. Junket reporters, local press, and members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association were at the IMAX at the AMC at Citywalk to see the film. A strict no-guest policy with wristbands were issued for entrance. The movie started promptly at 7 PM. But at about 8:15 PM, as a new reel began, the dialogue between Christian Bale and Michael Caine was clearly out of sync - with a full 5- to 10-second lip-flap after lines were spoken. After a few minutes the crowd shouted for a projectionist. The movie was stopped and the lights went up. A 40-year employee of IMAX said that this has never ever happened to him before. After 20 minutes the man came out again and said the sync computer had failed and could not be rebooted. A computer is now being taken out of IMAX headquarters in West Los Angeles and installed in the AMC Universal location overnight. Reporters were asked to return to the same theater Saturday at 8 AM to see the film. Warner Bros reps asked that everyone see the movie in its entirety and not just from where it left off.”

Wow that is even worse. Especially with all the hoopla about it being in 15/70, and then an epic fail. I can't imagine being in their shoes. I bet there will be all kinds of news stories circling around this movie that will spark up the film vs. digital stuff again.

Yeah it's started but many are getting it wrong already...they think it was a digital Imax issue but of course it's the digital sound sync to a 15/70 print issue.

Backup backup backup on VIP screenings, it doesn't matter what format you're running... shit happens.

That depends on what failed in the synchronization chain. If the projector encoder or the interlock distribution device failed, the backup audio would be out of sync too.

If it was the audio playback device that failed, then a dubber reel likely would have saved the show. That would be a huge reel.

Hmm, I've never seen a film soundtrack on the Otari 8-track reel-to-reel deck, but that can be interlocked too.

I was always under the impression that the dubber went out of favor long before 15/70 prints began to be feature film length. Who knows if the dubbers could have been modified to handle a feature length roll of mag stock.

There's just no way that the dubber would be able to handle the load of a full length 2 hr plus movie. Imagine how big a 35mm print is, usually 2 6k's give or take a little. So you need to have an entire 35mm Dubber sound track of the movie, which in turn would be the size of the film in 35. Just wouldn't work.

On to the article, either this guy that was running the show is a team lead or he's one of the worst IMAX projectionist's around. To fix this problem you don't just stop the show and then come back 20 minutes later and say its done. You can attempt to fix the sync issue while the shows running. It may or may not work but you don't just stop the show. I've had sync issues before where, when your locking the sound track in on the DFP your sync light flashes, you don't notice and it starts out of sync. Also had it drift out during a show once, was able to get it back. There very well could of been a break down with the DFP here but if you go from the comments section in that article this isn't the first time this situation has come up at City Walk.

If only IMAX would suck it up and use DTS technology all would be well. The idea that in 2012 we are still syncing BY FRAME COUNTS picture to sound is mind boggling.

That is a great picture Ian, I was referring to an IMAX dubber however and there just isn't the room to have a full print of a dubber soundtrack.

I'm seriously considering flying 1800+ kilometres to London and back just to catch The Dark Knight Rises at the BFI IMAX. However, it looks like they've only scheduled TDKR until August 28th, and of course I'm really busy until the end of the month...

I wonder what are the chances of BFI doing a rerun in 15/70mm later? Did they do anything like that with The Dark Knight – does anyone remember?

All these discussions about the 15/70 IMAX showings of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES on the mainland USA and elsewhere is making me very envious. Honolulu at one time had two 15/70 theatres but they are both gone now. One was at the Polynesian Cultural Centre at Laie on the north shore of Oahu and the other one was in the Waikiki district of Honolulu. The one in Wakikiki was part of Consolidated's Theatre' s Waikiki theatre complex consisting of the Wakiki #1, #2 and #3 theatres and the IMAX. I used to go the the Waikiki IMAX frequently and the last movie I saw there was Disney's BEAUTY & THE BEAST.

Sadly, the only IMAX theatre in Honolulu now is digital and it is a part of Regal Dole Cannery 18

It's pretty much certain that it will be showing for at least a further month as there are no further IMAX releases in the UK until 28th September. Keep an eye on the website.

I'd imagine since many of us are going to try and see this in 15/70, perhaps it'd be a good idea to either start a thread (or put it in this one) our technical reviews of the houses we see it in? A makeshift TAP program just for this release, of sorts...

It looks like I'll end up at Navy Pier for it, and plan to give a full review when done.

I'd rather go to Henry Ford...but it's a tougher day trip. If a bunch of people were going, however, I'd make the sacrifice: it's a better theater than Navy Pier.

Starting Thursday at midnight its playing at the Museum of Civilization's IMAX theatre in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. 15/70, 75 foot screen. They are advertising that 60 minutes of the film was shot on IMAX, I thought more?

I saw the film Monday in IMAX.. I agree with the above post that it is probably closer to 75 minutes give or take.

Already, the misinformation has started. I called Regal Atlantic Station (Atlanta) because I noticed on their website absolutely no distinction between the IMAX showing at the Mall of GA location(which has both digital and film) and the Atlantic Station location when it says you can watch The Dark Knight Rises - THE IMAX EXPERIENCE.

So the Atlantic Station guy tells me it is real IMAX. I sarcastically tell him "so it's 15/70 film based, not digital?" He replies "Oh we show digital too in the other auditoriums". I tell him that I am asking about the difference in IMAX formats themselves, not about regular digital showings. So then I told him "look , Mall of GA has real IMAX. Did you guys upgrade your IMAX since the last time I saw the mini IMAX for Mission IMpossible 4. He then says "no, that's the same IMAX" . So I told him that he needs to be clear with people who will mistake the two IMAXs. He still didn't seem to grasp there was more than one kind of IMAX.
