That depends. From 1982 to date there are nine (9) types of speakers that group into four (4) different groups of crossover points.

I know this isn't really related to the original poster's question/topic, but I have a question regarding how many speakers can be implemented in an IMAX auditorium. Isn't it generally 6-track [left, center, right, height and left/right surrounds]? I've read that at the Bob Bullock theater in Austin Texas the system is comprised of 44 individual speakers - does the number of speakers fluctuate on differing screens? I thought the core mix was 5.0, or is it 6.0 factoring in the height channel?

That would be 44 speaker drive units.

You're right there are 6 distinct channels plus sub bass but each channel has multiple drivers.

It seems many new Digital IMAX installs have eliminated the height center channel speaker to just an LCR stage with subs below. The Warren IMAXs in Wichita Ks and Moore Ok are like that anyway.
